The departures of Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay left a major void at the wide receiver position at Texas.
Brennan Eagles and Jake Smith are two notable names that are expected to fill those shoes this season. Smith is likely to fill Duvernay’s former role in the slot after appearing in all 13 games last season as a true freshman. His six receiving touchdowns were tied for the fourth-most among FBS freshman.
However, the hype surrounding Eagles this year is unparalleled. He’s now the most productive and experienced receiver on Texas’ roster. In 2019, Eagles compiled 32 catches for 522 yards and six touchdowns. Even in his limited role, he still managed to start seven games for the Longhorns last season.
Chris Martin of Stadium and Michael Felder of In The Bleachers recently broke down film of Eagles. Martin alluded to Eagles’ size and his ability to create separation due to him being a detailed and precise route runner on tape.
Brennan Eagles (@_BrennanEagles_) has big WR shoes to fill for @TexasFootball and he seems up for the challenge. #HookEm 🤘

Felder appeared to be impressed with Eagles’ game as well. He noticed that Eagles consistently runs stick routes and of his 32 receptions last season, 21 of those were for first downs.
The duo agreed that Eagles is a big-bodied player who plays physical and fights through contact. He’s not just a possession receiver and clearly knows how to move the chains with great body control and spatial awareness.
If Texas hopes to return as title contenders this season, Felder believes that Eagles will be a big part of their success.
