Social media reacts to Shaka Smart leaving Texas for Marquette

In a shocking turn of events, Shaka Smart chose to leave the Texas program after six seasons to accept the Marquette head coaching job.

There’s been no shortage of news surrounding the Texas men’s basketball program over the last week.

After the Longhorns were shockingly upset by Abilene Christian in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, Texas head coach Shaka Smart’s future in Austin looked bleak.

Smart has been with Texas for six seasons and has zero NCAA Tournament wins to show for it. While winning the Big 12 tournament championship this year was certainly a nice surprise, Smart’s squads couldn’t get it done when it mattered most.

While many assumed that Texas would move on from Smart in the near future, hardly anyone could have expected it to happen this way. On Friday, CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein broke the news that Marquette was closing in on hiring Smart as their next head basketball coach.

It’s as clean of an exit that you can ask for on both sides and expertly played by all Texas parties.
