Sam Howell named captain for Washington Commanders

Former UNC football quarterback Sam Howell was named a captain for the Washington Commanders.

Former North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Sam Howell is in his first year as the starter for the Washington Commanders after playing in just one year as a rookie. Howell had to sit behind both Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke before beating the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18.

Now, Howell is getting the chance to prove that he can be the guy for the Commanders. And his teammates are believing in him as well.

The Commanders announced their captains for the upcoming season as voted on by teammates, and Howell was one of six players to make the list. Joining Howell as captains are Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, cornerback Kendall Fuller, safety Jeremy Reaves, and punter Tress Way.

Howell’s first start in 2023 will come Sunday as the Commanders take on the Arizona Cardinals. A good first game could go a long ways, especially after he had a solid preseason.
