Sam Ehlinger likely to get an opportunity with Colts following Carson Wentz trade

Wentz has been traded to Washington and the Colts don’t have a first round pick in the 2022 NFL draft at the moment…

It’s been a wild few days across the NFL.

Aaron Rodgers decided to return to Green Bay, Russell Wilson was traded from Seattle to Denver, and several other players received the franchise tag.

The latest news came on Wednesday when the Indianapolis Colts traded quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders. Washington has clearly been in the market for a quarterback, but after reports stated they whiffed on Rodgers and Wilson, the Commanders settled for Wentz.

Adam Schefter’s report stated that the trade includes two third-round picks, confirming that the Colts do not have a first round pick in the 2022 NFL draft at the time. This could provide an ample opportunity for former Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger to compete for the starting role this offseason.

The Colts could still search for a veteran quarterback to trade for such as Jimmy Garoppolo, or draft one at some point in the upcoming draft. Potentially doing both of those options are on the table.

However, don’t count out Ehlinger. The Indianapolis coaching staff has been very impressed by the now second-year quarterback and he will have every opportunity to compete throughout training camp.

Ehlinger received minimal playing time as a rookie last season while serving as the backup to Wentz, but finished his collegiate career at Texas with 11,436 passing yards and 94 touchdowns.
