Saints’ preseason finale should be the Jake Haener show

Jake Haener’s snaps should increase versus the Houston Texans. The Saints should take advantage of what is likely his last in-game action | @southexclusives

New Orleans Saints fans will see Jameis Winston and Jake Haener only in the upcoming preseason game against the Houston Texans. Dennis Allen has recently announced Derek Carr will not play in the final preseason game. Carr was efficient and effective in his only drive versus the Kansas City Chiefs. That trend extended to joint practices with the Los Angeles Chargers. With joint practices with the Texans cancelled, there was a question on if starters would then play this week.

Allen put that to bed and announced Winston will start this game. It wasn’t stated how much time he will play however. The Saints should make it a priority to get Jake Haener more time in this finale. As the third quarterback, Haener will not see a lot of time during the regular season. Add this to the fact he’s only a rookie.

Haener simply will benefit from these preseason snaps more than Winston will. He showed growth from the first preseason to the second game. Extended action May also can expose more flaws that Haener can work on, both are beneficial. Haener has played exclusively in the second half this preseason. He should see some first-half snaps as well this week, possibly the whole second quarter.
