Sacramento Kings hire former Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry as associate head coach

After being fired from the Pelicans in August, Alvin Gentry has joined the Kings’ coaching staff as the associate head coach.

After being initially linked to Philadelphia for a reunion with Doc Rivers, Alvin Gentry was officially announced as an associate head coach for the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday. Gentry will join head coach Luke Walton’s staff as Walton provided the following statement on the hiring of Gentry.

“I’m excited to add Alvin’s valuable experience and leadership to the team. His veteran coaching perspective will be a great addition and I look forward to working with him again to continue developing our group.”

Gentry and Walton have a limited history with one another with their most recent and relevant connection coming in Golden State. The pair served together on Steve Kerr’s staff in 2014-15, Gentry as the associate head coach and Walton as an assistant.

Gentry would leave after that season to take the head coach position in New Orleans and Walton would be elevated to the associate head coach position. Walton, memorably, stepped in for Kerr, who missed time due to injury, and amassed a 39-4 record as the interim coach.
