On a day when the biggest news out of Ohio State practice might have been the arrival of Quinn Ewers for his first practice, Ryan Day made a telling statement about the quarterback race. Ewers, who is the highest-ranked recruit ever to commit to the Buckeyes, wasn’t the story today.
During his Monday press conference, Day let it be known what most have thought all along. The starting quarterback job is C.J. Stroud’s to lose — or something like that.
While Day said he wasn’t ready to name a starter just yet, he shared his thoughts on Stroud and this race:
“I would say right now, we’re not gonna name a starter today, but I do think there has been a little bit of separation,” Day said. I think that C.J.’s separated a little bit here over the last couple of weeks. We’ll see what this week brings. Certainly not making any decisions right now. But we have seen a little separation, yes.”

Day made it clear a decision hasn’t been made, but it certainly sounds like it would take an epic fall or an injury for Stroud to lose the job.
Day offered more glowing comments about the young man who backed up Justin Fields last year.
“He’s been competing; he’s been taking care of the football,” Day shared. “Making good decisions. He’s been a leader. Those are all some of the traits that we’re looking for.”
Those are positive words you want to hear about your starting quarterback. And with just about two-and–a-half weeks before the opener at Minnesota, it may not be long before a starter is named. At this point, it looks like Stroud will be that guy.
