Ryan Day caught off guard by Quinn Ewers transfer news

News of Quinn Ewers transferring took Ryan Day somewhat by surprise.

With the plethora of talent in the quarterback room at Ohio State, most fans had been speculating there was no way everyone would stay. Not many were surprised by the news of Jack Miller opting to enter the transfer portal after being buried on the depth chart. However, when Quinn Ewers opted to leave after skipping his senior year of high school to come to OSU, that left some of us a little surprised, including it appears, head coach Ryan Day.

When asked if he was surprised by the news Ewers was entering the portal, Day responded “It caught me a little bit for sure off guard.”

And why wouldn’t it? The decision seemed to make no sense after enrolling so late. The new freshmen had been there since at least June, many coming to Columbus all the way back in January. But the allure of millions with NIL deals was too much for Ewers to pass up. And before we start throwing stones, it would have been too much for most of us to pass up as well. The kid signed a deal for more than a million dollars before ever throwing a collegiate pass. Good gig if you can get it.

Maybe as the head coach, Day should’ve seen this coming. Then again, maybe there were some circumstances that are beyond anyone’s control. I mean, if a kid misses home, there’s not much a coach can do. Either way, Day had nothing but positive vibes for the young QB saying, “… we wish him nothing but the best of luck moving forward.”

In an ever-changing world, college football looks a whole lot different than it did even just a few years ago. That change is going to be hard for some of the traditionalists of the sport. Welcome to the brave new world of collegiate athletics where the only thing that will be constant is change.
