The expectations surrounding Quinn Ewers are sky high.
The Ohio State transfer joined the Texas football season this offseason and is expected to compete for the starting job at quarterback alongside Hudson Card throughout spring ball and fall camp.
Card may have the leg up in the competition at the moment due to his experience, but Ewers is the favorite to ultimately take the first snap for Texas when they take on LA-Monroe in the season opener.
Ewers is far too talented to remain on the sidelines for long. While the five-star quarterback did not attempt a pass at Ohio State nor did he play his senior year of high school, his former Southlake Carroll head coach, Riley Dodge, recently caught up with Horns247 to remind everyone of Ewers’ abilities.
He can touch 53 yards wide, I mean he can touch every blade of the grass on the field. He’s one of the generational talents when it comes to arm strength. I think probably the one thing that’s the most impressive about him is how twitchy he is as a thrower. He can put the ball on the perimeter — quick game, spits, RPOs, I’m talking about from the line of scrimmage to 12 yards down the field — better than anybody I’ve ever seen live. I mean the ball is out and it is quick, and it’s going to be an extension of the run game for the Longhorns. When you have a kid who’s twitchy and can get the ball out in the blink of an eye, it really stresses defenses. He’s not a slow blinker. He can really rip the football and get the ball out of his hands.
Much has been said about Ewers’ talents on the football field over the years, but many are curious of his off-the-field demeanor and how the transition to Texas will impact him, but Dodge is confident that Ewers will be able to digest the film and playbook quickly.
He takes the board to grass very, very quickly. He’s going to be able to do a lot. The kid loves the film room. He’s a sponge. But the thing about Quinn is he’s not a guy that’s going to overpower you with questions. He’s going to sit there, he’s going to take notes, he’s a sponge and then you’re sitting there like is he taking it in? And then he takes it to the grass. He’s not a burst guy. He’s not a missed assignment guy. He takes it seriously and he’s a smart cat.
If anyone knows Ewers on a deep level, it’s surely Dodge. His recent comments on Ewers’ potential at Texas only heightens the expectations and excitement surrounding him becoming the quarterback of the future for the Longhorns.
