Report: Sean McDermott, Bills coaches not yet back at work

The MMQB on when Sean McDermott and Buffalo Bills coaches will return to work.

In some sorely needed positive news last week, the NFL announced that coaching staffs were allowed to return to work on Friday. Prior to that, the league told teams they were not allowed to gather at team facilities due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Everything had to be done remotely.

But Sean McDermott evidently was not chomping at the bit to break down the doors at One Bills Drive at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, like some may have thought.

According to Albert Breer at the MMQB, the Bills coaching staff still doesn’t exactly have a set return date to Orchard Park. Per the MMQB, it’ll just be at some time this upcoming week:

There are some that are bringing pieces of their staffs back. The Bills and Texans, for example, will have their head coaches and coordinators in-house at some point this week. Houston is going to use the opportunity to wrap up their virtual offseason program on Friday.

Of course in these uncertain times, there isn’t really a right or wrong answer here for McDermott and the rest of the Bills coaching staff. Really only a handful of NFL folks even were reportedly in the office on Friday. The Bengals were back at it, but pretty much the rest of the league didn’t have their entire coaching staffs in.

The Packers’ Matt LaFleur, the Steelers’ Mike Tomlin, the Jags’ Doug Marrone were among head coaches that were working in-house on Friday, but the rest of their co-workers weren’t. On Monday, the Titans, Falcons, Dolphins and Ravens went back, but the Bills were not listed among this category, so it’s safe to say Buffalo will see their coaches around between Tuesday and Friday.

If the Bills do get back into the team facility this week, they’ll still be ahead of a boatload of others. The Bucs and Rams are waiting another week while some such as the Saints and Colts are waiting until training camp. Plenty of others are waiting around, too.

But still interesting to note the different approaches teams are taking.
