Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White is not leaving Lincoln, at least not yet.
On Tuesday, it was reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel that San Diego State is expected to come to a deal with Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis to become the next head coach of the Aztecs. It was previously reported that Tony White had interviewed for the job at San Diego State.
Lewis, the former head coach at Kent State, left the Flashes last offseason to join Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado. During his five seasons at Kent State, Lewis led the Flashes to a 24-31 record, including 19-17 in MAC play. He has also spent time in his career at Nebraska-Omaha, Akron, Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green, and Syracuse.
In early November, Lewis was demoted as Colorado’s offensive coordinator after averaging 32.1 points per game for the Buffaloes. Once that move was made by Sanders, many believed Lewis’s time in Boulder would be likely coming to an end. That has now become a reality as he takes over the Mountain West program.
San Diego State is coming off a 4-8 season under Brady Hoke, who chose to retire at the end of the regular season. The Aztecs are just two seasons removed from a 12-win season in 2021 which saw them ranked as high as 19th in the College Football Playoff poll. They also had 10+ win seasons in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019.
