Report: Saints to start Trevor Siemian, not Taysom Hill, against Falcons

Bang: there’s a new QB1 for the New Orleans Saints. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Trevor Siemian is expected to start against the Atlanta Falcons this week in the wake of a season-ending knee injury for Jameis Winston, even with a healthy Taysom Hill at the ready.

That isn’t too surprising given how effective Siemian was at a moment’s notice a week ago against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With a full week of practice reps behind him, “T-Money Sizzle” should be well-prepared for whatever Atlanta can throw at him.

Siemian completed 16 of 29 pass attempts against Tampa Bay for 159 passing yards, connecting with fullback Alex Armah Jr. on a crafty touchdown lob. He only took one sack and saw an ugly interception wiped out by a foolish defensive penalty. While Siemian did fumble once and had trouble securing some snaps out of shotgun, that’s an easy fix with more time in practice. Erik McCoy knows his preferred cadence know after preparing to work with Winston.

We’ll see if Siemian has what it takes to lead the Saints to the playoffs. But their roster has been built well enough to where he just needs to avoid mistakes while his talented teammates take on a heavier workload.
