ESPN’s Michael Rothstein is reporting that the Detroit Lions are waiving 5th round rookie running back/ kick returner Jason Huntley.
During training camp, Huntley proved he is a dynamic player capable of making an impact on offense and special teams — but apparently he still has some things to flush out.
The Lions backfield was hit with injuries all throughout camp — including to Huntley who missed a practice — but his release today is a strong indicator that both D’Andre Swift and Bo Scarbrough are closer to full health than when we last saw them a week ago.
This move is also a nice indicator that the Lions are comfortable retaining Jamal Agnew as their primary returner on kick and punt returns.
Huntley will surely be headed for the practice squad — assuming he clears waivers — and could possibly be a candidate for protection on a given week, especially if the injury bug persists among the running back group.
