Report: Jets DB Jamal Adams would welcome a trade to Chiefs

New York Jets DB Jamal Adams wants to be traded and the Kansas City Chiefs are reported to be among the destinations he wouldn’t mind.

New York Jets All-Pro safety Jamal Adams officially requested a trade on Thursday. The former sixth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft has been in a feud with his team over former trade speculation and most recently a contract extension. The uncertainty surrounding his future has made for a rocky relationship and it appears that he’s had enough.

According to a new report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs are among the seven teams that Jets DB Jamal Adams would welcome a trade to. Apart from the Dallas Cowboys, the main similarity between the teams Adams would welcome a trade to is that they all made the playoffs in 2019.

Since entering the league in 2017 out of LSU, Adams has been one of the premier safeties in the NFL. He has started 46 games in three seasons, recording 273 total tackles, 28 tackles for loss, two interceptions, 25 passes defended, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

The prospect of adding Adams is an exciting one, especially with the talent this team already has at safety in Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill, Daniel Sorensen and Armani Watts. The addition of Adams would put that position group over the top.

The big problem is that the Chiefs are tight against the salary cap, having yet to sign their rookie draft class. They also have a player of their own with contract woes in star DT Chris Jones, who hasn’t yet signed his franchise tag tender. They also need to secure a contract extension for QB Patrick Mahomes, which is supposedly underway.

It seems unlikely that Kansas City would be able to pull off a trade for Adams, but if he doesn’t immediately request an extension, it’s always possible they could work something out. The situation is at the very least worth monitoring given Brett Veach’s reputation when it comes to acquiring players via trade.
