The Buffalo Bills got a massive break against the Kansas City Chiefs.
In the end, they lost. But it could very well be the last time a team in the NFL ever gets such a call.
The Bills attempted a fake punt which was stuffed by the Chiefs.
On the ensuing drive, Kansas City got down to Buffalo’s goal line but fumbled. The ball was dropped by Chiefs wideout Mecole Hardman after he was hit by Bills safety Jordan Poyer:

As shown in the video above, the ball then went through the back of the end zone. The ruling is, and was called correctly, a touchback. Buffalo got the ball back.
Despite that call not biting Kansas City in the end, it’s still set to be changed according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler:
Good chance the touchback rule for fumbling through the end zone will be changed this offseason. Momentum behind NFL correcting it. Penalty considered by many to be too harsh.

While the rule could be changed… that does not mean it will be scraped. What could the NFL change it to? If there is any movement on this idea, the decision will be made at the NFL owners meetings this offseason.
