New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has never traded down in the NFL Draft over the course of his career, but acknowledges the team is very much “open for business” at No. 4 overall here in 2020.
“It’s something I will very seriously entertain,” Gettleman said during a Friday conference call with reporters. “We’re sitting there with the fourth pick of the draft. It’s going to happen pretty soon. I’m going to make calls and anybody that wants to move up, I’m going to say, ‘Listen, we don’t have much time. We can’t fool around. I’d like to get the parameters of a deal in place before we get on the clock.’ That would be the best thing.”
However, if no one takes the bait and the Giants end up making their pick at No. 4, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports they will give strong consideration to trading back in Round 2, where they hold pick No. 36 overall.
League sources told The Post if the Giants do not trade down at No. 4, a second-round trade-back at No. 36 will be considered strongly — and that scenario actually could be the internal preference for restocking depth.
Based on the NFL’s draft pick value chart, the No. 36 pick is worth 540 points, which is more than double the value of the last pick in the round. Accordingly, the Giants could still get a quality haul for their second-round pick, possibly stacking additional picks in the round and later on in the draft.
Currently, the Giants have 10 picks in this week’s draft, but only three of those come in the top 100. A move back from either No. 4 or No. 36 would give them additional picks in the top 100, allowing them to fill out their depth with some quality prospects as opposed to hoping they hit on one or two of their seven Day 3 picks.
