Report: Giants do not intend to trade Evan Engram

The NFL trade deadline is rapidly approaching, but a report suggests the New York Giants intend to hang onto TE Evan Engram.

Ever since the New York Giants selected tight end Evan Engram in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, fans and pundits have been waiting for the Ole Miss product to break out and become a difference maker.

Engram’s size should make him a mismatch for defensive backs while his speed should make him a mismatch for linebackers. The tools are all there.

However, now in year four of his NFL career, Engram has still not broken out as the dynamic star the Giants thought they were getting when they took him 23rd overall. Engram has been hit by a few injuries as well as a bad case of the drops.

Engram has been a part of trade rumors dating back quite a while and this year’s trade deadline is no different. That was magnified following Engram’s drop in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles, which cost his team victory and added to the woes of quarterback Daniel Jones.

As the trade continues to creep closer by the hour, the Giants do not intend to trade Engram, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport.

There has been some interest in Browns TE David Njoku and Giants TE Evan Engram, though neither team intends to move either guy. Perhaps if they are blown away by a monster deal, but both talented young tight ends figure to stay put.

Of course, as it is with any player, everyone has a price that a given GM would pull the trigger on a deal. Engram is due to make $6M next year which the Giants could certainly use to address holes elsewhere.

It’s hard to imagine what kind of return the Giants could get the Engram given the underachieving play at this point of his career. The Giants received just a sixth-round pick in return for Markus Golden, who had double-digit sacks last season.

At some point in his career, Engram may catch on and break out with another team in the right system given his athleticism. For now however, it seems as though the Giants will hang on to Engram and keep trying to find the right mix for him.
