Report: Dolphins are fielding trade inquiries for QB Josh Rosen

Just when you thought you knew what the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback room was going to look like, the team may be winding up and getting ready to toss another curveball. The Dolphins have been operating with a strong quarterback room this summer with Ryan Fitzpatrick and two former top-10 overall selections in Josh Rosen and Tua Tagovailoa in the mix as Miami has held an open competition for the starting quarterback job. Fitzpatrick is expected to hold the starting gig to open the season, leaving Rosen and Tagovailoa as young, talented hopefuls to play down the road.

But only one of them will be able to take the mantle of quarterback of the future in Miami. And, despite a poor showing in 2019 when playing for the Dolphins under former coordinator Chad O’Shea, it seems as though there is NFL interest in Rosen once again should Miami find a value it likes. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the Dolphins are fielding trade inquiries for Rosen.

Miami making this move, at this point, would be a stunner unless someone stepped up and gave the Dolphins a significant offer. There is value in having Rosen in the building as a young, cheap backup over the next two seasons. But the lack of a preseason this summer and sapped Miami’s ability to properly rehab his image and drum up a potential trade market with the team presumably committed to Tagovailoa being the quarterback of the future. Given Rosen’s value to Miami as a young, talented arm, someone is going to have to prompt the Dolphins to move on from their 2019 investment with a fair offer — or the Dolphins are going to have to be desperate to clear up their quarterback room and remove all doubt for who is the heir in Miami.

This is a developing story. For a report to have made it to Schefter’s phone, one can assume there’s plenty of meat to it. Whether or not the Dolphins jump on a deal is yet to be determined, but it would make sense if the team gets an offer they feel is appropriate value. The challenge, of course, is Rosen’s showcase in Miami hasn’t given him many opportunities to create that kind of interest.
