Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has already been connected to the vacant head coaching position with the New York Giants.
Earlier this week, a report surfaced that said the Giants are “very interested” in him.
But the Giants are going through a bit of a “one step at a time” situation. Before hiring a coach, they are looking to sign up a general manager. However, new updates indicate that this first step has also included Daboll.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Daboll’s name has been brought up in GM interviews the Giants are holding:
General managers go into interviews with a list of head-coaching candidates with whom they’d like to work. Sometimes, hot names overlap. I’m told that’s the case with Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who is on the list of multiple general manager finalists. The Giants have officially requested to speak with Quinn, and I’m expecting them to do the same with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, whose name has been involved in the GM proceedings. Buffalo executive Joe Schoen is believed to be close with Daboll, who can help the Giants’ quarterback position, whether that’s Daniel Jones or someone else (the new GM will make that call).
Schoen, Buffalo’s assistant general manager, is firmly on the Giants’ radar for their GM position. He’s already had two interviews with New York.
If Schoen ends up with the G-Men, clearly Daboll will be on his shortlist of coach candidates. But the fact that Daboll has been generalized as a name that has “been involved in the GM proceedings” suggests there’s serious interest in the Bills offensive coordinator even if another candidate lands the general position over Schoen.
Later on in this ESPN report it is suggested that the Giants might make their decision on their GM by the weekend. That could speed things up regarding Daboll’s future as well.
