Report: Barring trade, Pistons to draft Cade Cunningham at No. 1

Unless Houston trades up to No. 1, it appears they will be deciding between Jalen Green and Evan Mobley at No. 2 in Thursday’s first round.

Barring an unlikely trade, the Detroit Pistons will pick Oklahoma State wing Cade Cunningham at No. 1 overall in Thursday’s 2021 NBA draft, according to a midday update by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

“Trade offers to move up the board — including to No. 1 — continue to come, so there’s always the possibility that a proposal could blow the Pistons away,” Woj tweeted. “But if they’re taking the pick for themselves at No. 1 tonight, they’re taking Cade Cunningham, sources tell ESPN.”

According to Wojnarowski, Detroit officials traveled to New York on Wednesday and met with Cunningham a final time before finalizing their decision on Thursday morning. The draft takes place Thursday night from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Unless Houston trades up, Cunningham going to the Pistons is likely to leave the Rockets with a choice at No. 2 overall between G League Ignite guard Jalen Green and University of Southern California (USC) big man Evan Mobley. Most draft experts expect them to take Green.

Thursday night’s draft begins at 7:00 p.m. Central, and it can be watched on ESPN and ABC. Houston currently owns selections at No. 2, No. 23, and No. 24 in the 2021 first round.
