Ranking the Bills’ needs after first wave of free agency

With all those moves in mind and as the second week of free agency gets underway, here’s an updated ranking of the Bills’ needs and the offseason rolls on:

9. Defensive tackle

The Bills are operating in a mode at this position surrounding Ed Oliver. It appears they expect an improvement from him this year.

That’s the right call to make.

While Buffalo was attached to DJ Reader in free agency, one of the top options out there, they probably just made a phone call and that’s it. After Jordan Phillips departed via free agency, Quinton Jefferson and Vernon Butler were added to a group that also includes Harrison Phillips, Star Lotulelei and Vincent Taylor.

Clearly the Bills want depth at this position and depth is what they’ve got. Jefferson might also see time at the edge with his positional flexibility, but even if he does hop there, Butler is a former first-round talent and the returning Phillips has also shown well in his brief career, too.

This group is pretty stacked. Imagine if Oliver does have a breakout year.
