Ranking the Bills’ needs after first wave of free agency

With all those moves in mind and as the second week of free agency gets underway, here’s an updated ranking of the Bills’ needs and the offseason rolls on:

7. Offensive line

While we separated the defensive end and tackle spots in this ranking, the offensive line gets one whole group. The overlying reason is because this unit  has everyone returning to it.

Quinton Spain re-signed with the Bills during the early stages of free agency, that means from left to right on the offensive line, Buffalo returns Dion Dawkins, Spain, Mitch Morse, Jon Feliciano and Cody Ford. Plus Ty Nsekhe will be back from injury, who rotated at right tackle, and Spencer Long had his option on his contract flex by the Bills. He is the main backup at center and guard.

All the starters are back and the main depth guys are, too. That doesn’t happen often in the NFL so kudos to the Bills for having that luxury. But having said that, Buffalo’s offensive line wasn’t perfect. At the end of last season, PFF ranked Buffalo’s offensive line the 21st best unit in the league.

Again, two sides to consider here. Why only 21? Well, yes, the Bills offensive line was much better last season compared to the year prior, but the bar set that season was so, so low, it likely seemed light years better. Really the group was probably an average one.

Having said that, again, all five starters are returning. That’s big. The Bills offensive line will have another entire year to build on that chemistry. The odds on favorite is this group will all return to start again, with a slight chance Ford gets reps at guard.
