Ranking the Bills’ needs after first wave of free agency

With all those moves in mind and as the second week of free agency gets underway, here’s an updated ranking of the Bills’ needs and the offseason rolls on:

6. Quarterback

It’s time to replace Josh Allen.

Kidding, the Bills aren’t doing that and he isn’t going to have any competition added to his quarterback room.

But perhaps Matt Barkley should get pushed? In his brief career with the Bills, Barkley has one start. He won, beating the Jets in a butt whooping. Some even thought he should start after that. But there’s a few things to consider here on both sides of the fence.

In that 2018 start, the Jets actually admitted that they didn’t prepare to face Barkley that week, they prepped and game planned for Allen but got a completely different type of QB in Barkley. It’s still an NFL win and deserves respect, but there’s that. Since that game, Barkley only has depth appearances for the Bills and… looked much worse.

In regard to behind the scenes, Barkley only has 14 games played worth of experience. Allen now actually has way more experience than Barkley with 28 games played. So again, two sides here: the Bills could add someone with more experience there for Allen to lean on, or they can ride with Barkley, who appears to be a very supportive teammate.

But if the Bills did add competition, they have to be selective. Imagine they add someone like Jameis Winston? That seems unlikely, but if they brought in someone they can’t bring in anyone who could stir up any sort of excitement in the fan base (no offense, Matt).

Also… there’s Davis Webb, who was Buffalo’s No. 3 on the practice squad last year. And one last point to consider: the Bills aren’t far removed from having played four QBs in the 2018 season, too. So don’t underestimate the backup and depth needed here.
