Rams needed special approval from NFL for ‘bone’ uniform

The Rams couldn’t have a gray away uniform without first getting approval from the NFL.

Whether the Rams’ new uniforms are loved or hated, one thing’s for sure: Their away jerseys are one-of-a-kind.

Rather than going with a traditional white away uniform, the Rams unveiled a color they call “bone” – meant to resemble the color of a ram horn and the beaches of Los Angeles. It’s a bold decision, and one that couldn’t have happened without approval from the NFL.

According to Greg Beacham of the Associated Press, the Rams needed to get permission from the league to wear the off-white color as their away uniform – since there’s a chance it could clash with the color of teams’ home uniforms.

Jordan Rodrigue of The Athletic also reported that NFL Films had to take players wearing the “bone” uniforms out to a field to ensure it could be differentiated from a colored jersey.

NFL Films took the uniforms and a few players out to a vacant high school field in New Jersey last summer and shot activity as though it were a game, to make sure the jersey would differentiate itself enough on screen, alongside an opposing color jersey.

The away jersey isn’t the only aspect of the uniform set that the Rams needed special approval for. Rodrigue says the Rams had to ask the NFL before removing the “TV numbers” from the shoulders of the home jerseys.

The Rams certainly thought outside the box with their away uniforms and the gradient numbers, which were each received with mixed reviews on Twitter. They should look better on the field than they do in these photos, though.
