When quarterback Quinn Ewers announced he was transferring to Texas the excitement from Longhorns fans was through the roof.
Every single Texas fan was envisioning the possible connection between Ewers, who has one of the strongest arms in the country, and speedy wide receiver Xavier Worthy. However, while there were flashes and many chances throughout the 2022 season, the two never seemed able to consistently connect.
While they struggled to connect last year the expectations going into the 2023 season is that they will put it together. And while most fans outside of the burnt orange faithful would scoff at the expectations, those around the sport are confident it will happen as well. In their recent 2024 NFL mock draft, 247Sports projected both Ewers and Worthy going within the top-15 picks.
Starting with Ewers who they have going as the No. 8 overall pick to the Washington Commanders.
And the third quarterback off the board in the 2024 NFL Draft is … Longhorns star Quinn Ewers. He’s going to be a breakout sensation this year at Texas if this talented front gives him time. 247Sports ranked Ewers as the No. 1 player in his recruiting cycle and after transferring to Texas from Ohio State, and Ewers made an instant splash with 15 touchdown passes. By comparison, he has more premium targets around him than Maye and the collection of the Longhorns’ talent on offense might be more impressive than Williams’ supporting cast at USC. Ewers has a chance to star at the combine, too. Expect Washington to go quarterback unless Sam Howell has a magical season in 2023.
Just three picks later, Worthy was projected to be picked by the New Orleans Saints.
From dominating as a true freshman in 2021 to being a slightly less explosive player last fall, Worthy is likely a three-and-done player at Texas with another 60-catch, 800-yard season as a junior. He’ll have help this time around with Isaiah Neyor back from a season-ending injury and the recent acquisition of Georgia’s AD Mitchell from the portal. Worthy is one of college football’s fastest players and scores a touchdown every 5.8 times he touches the football as a receiver.
If Ewers and Worthy are clicking on all cylinders, it becomes inherently harder to imagine that any defense in the country can stop this passing attack. Aside from Worthy, Ewers has a chance to dramatically improve with the emergence of Neyor and Georgia transfer AD Mitchell.
Texas fans may finally get the glorified passing attack they had been anticipating since the hiring of Steve Sarkisian.
