The San Antonio Spurs snapped a five-game losing streak on Wednesday night. They blew out the Detroit Pistons, a fellow bottom-feeder, taking home a 130-108 win. It was a battle of the worst teams in the NBA, but with Cade Cunningham sidelined, the Spurs had an advantage, and they utilized it.
Victor Wembanyama led the way for the Spurs, posting his first-ever triple-double in just 21:02 (the second-fastest triple-double in NBA history). It was an incredible performance from one of the league’s top rookies. Jalen Duren did his best to keep up, dropping a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double, but it wasn’t enough, especially without Cunningham active.
After the game, head coach Gregg Popovich and Spurs teammate Devin Vassell showed love to Wembanyama for his performance.
“He’s just a very good passer,” Popovich said via ESPN. “He was a good passer before he got here.”
Vassell spoke about how much the Spurs are asking of the rookie this season.
“We’re asking him to do a lot, and he’s ready for it,” said Vassell.
Wembanyama ended the night with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists while shooting 6-of-16 from the field and 0-of-4 from behind the three-point line.
Having a guy like Wembanyama means the Spurs are set up beautifully for the future. They may not be winning many games right now, but Wembanyama clearly has the talent to be the face of the franchise.
Add in the greatest coach of all-time and young studs like Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and more, and the Spurs are in a great place moving forward.
