Pistons’ Killian Hayes ‘progressing well’ in recovery from hip injury

Pistons general manager Troy Weaver hinted on Tuesday that Hayes could be ready to return soon.

Detroit Pistons general manager Troy Weaver on Tuesday said rookie Killian Hayes is progressing well in his recovery from a right hip injury suffered on Jan. 4 versus the Milwaukee Bucks.

The team announced on Jan. 20 that Hayes would be re-evaluated in eight weeks after further evaluation indicated the origin of the injury as a subluxation, which is a partial dislocation. The injury did not require surgery and would be treated with rest and rehabilitation.

With the eight-week timeline approaching, Weaver offered an update on Hayes’ status and hinted that he could be ready to return to play at some point in the second half of the season.

“Hopefully, we get to see him again in the near future,” Weaver said. “Next week we will have an update at the eight-week mark so we’ll provide an update (then). He is progressing well. It has been exciting to see him grow and come back from his setback. He has been working diligently. We’re excited to have him join the team here shortly.”

Hayes is viewed as a significant building block for the future of the Pistons, along with several other rookies. The team prioritized his development prior to his injury and wanted to give him the opportunity to log heavy minutes to adjust to the NBA game.

The organization will certainly be cautious with his return but it appears as though Hayes could soon join the team back on the court. In seven games, Hayes is averaging 4.6 points and 3.6 assists this season.
