Phillies at White Sox Game 2 projected starters

LHP Bailey Falter vs. RHP Lucas Giolito

Falter (0-2, 4.80 ERA) is tabbed for his 4th start. He has a 1.33 WHIP, 0.6 BB/9 and 5.4 K/9 through 15 IP.

  • Coming off a rough outing against Cincinnati Thursday where he allowed 5 ER on 8 H and 1 BB with 4 K in 4 2/3 IP
  • Facing a White Sox order which is typically heavy leaning to the right, and that could be a problem: for his career, Falter has yielded a mere .674 OPS against left-handed batters but righties have banged out a .797 figure

Giolito (0-1, 6.00 ERA) makes his 4th start. He has a 1.67 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9 and 9.6 K/9 through 15 IP.

  • Making his first home start of the 2023 season; owns a 4.87 ERA at home over the last two seasons
  • Threw 108 pitches in his last effort
  • Has been dinged by a .408 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) and a low left-on-base rate
  • Tends to be a strong finisher in August-September but has allowed a .767 OPS in March/April games over his career

Phillies at White Sox Game 2 picks and predictions

Prediction

White Sox 4, Phillies 3

Moneyline

The Phillies have the better offense, but Giolito — and to a certain extent, the doubleheader lineups — are equalizers. The White Sox offer a sliver of profit on this number, so consider a partial-unit play on CHICAGO (-120) or perhaps wait out a better tag.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

Over/Under

The Under is 5-0-1 in Chicago’s last 6 nightcaps of doubleheaders.

Both of these bullpens have been awful so far. They own the league’s highest two ERAs (Phillies 6.83, White Sox 7.57), but they have both been severely BABIP-ripped so far (Phillies .353, White Sox .400). They aren’t terribly likable ‘pens overall, but they are better than advertised by their current surface numbers.

This play is fueled all around by BABIP and similar “luck” factors. Both starting pitchers have pitched better than what shows in their stat lines.

The Chicago weather report calls for a cold night with a double-digit wind blowing in. — upwards of 20 miles per hour — blowing out toward center field. In a second game when a frontline bat or two perhaps gets rested, BACK THE UNDER 8.5 (+100).
