The New York Giants revamped their secondary this offseason, mainly due to salary cap constraints, leaving them a bit thin and inexperienced but they are confident they will come out fine on the other side.
So are the folks at Pro Football Focus, who rank the Giants’ secondary 20th out of 32 heading into the 2022 NFL season. They call them an “ascending unit.”
The Giants have invested plenty of resources into their secondary on Days 2 and 3 of the draft in recent years, and it shows in their depth. This ranking could look a lot different at the year’s end if Xavier McKinney takes a similar leap forward in 2022 as he did in 2021. He went from a 69.2 coverage grade on limited snaps as a rookie to a 78.4 coverage grade last season. Bet on him becoming a top-10 safety sooner rather than later.
Xavier McKinney and corner Adoree’ Jackson are the main leftovers from last year’s group which include the now departed safeties Logan Ryan and Jabrill Peppers and cornerback James Bradberry.
PFF lists the Giants’ starters as follows: Jackson and Aaron Robinson at corner, Darnay Holmes at slot corner and McKinney and Julian Love at safety.
That is how they stand should they have to play a game tomorrow but many suspect that rookies Cor’Dale Flott and Dane Belton will end up playing major roles in the slot and at safety respectively.
The Giants have also invited a small army of veteran defensive backs such as Michael Jacquet, Henry Black, Maurice Canady and Khalil Dorsey to go along with an incumbent group of Jarren Williams and Rodarius Williams and UDFAs Yusef Corker, Darren Evans, Trenton Thompson and Zyon Gilbert.
