Pro Football Focus thinks the Buffalo Bills have wide receiver Stefon Diggs signed to the best contract in the NFL. The football analytics outlet used their wins above replacement figure and other metrics in the discussion and decided Diggs’ deal ranks better than any other in the league currently:
1. WR STEFON DIGGS, BUFFALO BILLS: FIVE YEARS, $72 MILLION ($11 MILLION IN REMAINING GUARANTEES)
Diggs has been a top-10 wide receiver in cumulative wins above replacement (WAR) over the last three seasons and still has three years remaining on his extension signed with Minnesota. DeAndre Hopkins was able to secure the top deal at the position from the Arizona Cardinals with three years still remaining on his deal originally signed with the Houston Texans, so recent precedent is working strongly in Diggs’ favor. Nevertheless, until that extension comes, this is the best value contract in the NFL currently.
For Diggs, the dollars barely even matter. If you’re traded for and immediately lead the NFL in nearly every receiving statistic in your first season at your new club? Yes, the move was worth it.
But getting Diggs under such a contract and on the top of this ranking is certainly a feather in the cap of Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane. The GM has also found ways to restructure several contracts this offseason to keep the Bills under the dwindling salary cap, while also re-signing key pieces like linebacker Matt Milano.
En route for Beane next might be his biggest challenge yet, though. Getting quarterback Josh Allen under a long-term extension.
