When Texas A&M left the Big 12 over a decade ago, there were debates on if it was a good move and what it meant for the conference. There was blame tossed around and claims of favoritism for a certain Network.
However, here we are twelve years later, and Texas has decided that the grass is actually greener on the other side. Many factors contributed to Texas eventually following Texas A&M to the SEC, but Paul Finebaum gave his insight on why they finally made the move and I tend to agree.
“This is going to sound really backwards, Matt, but the greatest accomplishment that Texas A&M has achieved is that they, in essence, forced Texas to follow them into the SEC. And that’s as convoluted as anything you’ve ever heard, but that’s really why Texas decided to make that move, because they saw how much money A&M was making. They saw, recruiting-wise, they were doing so much better….”
The Aggies have not blown away the competition since joining the SEC, but they have been recruiting better, and the revenue has help them upgrade their facilities. Perhaps one of the main factors is relevancy. Texas A&M is constantly being mentioned in one way or another across multiple platforms and Texas has taken notice. In this era of social media and NIL having your name being brought up on a regular basis is a plus and almost a requirement.
Time will tell when who will become the big winner, but as of today, what the Aggies have been able to accomplish is probably what pushed Texas of the hump to follow them to the SEC.
