History

Carolina and Buffalo have met up for seven preseason contests, spanning from 1996 to 2019. The former has the slight edge on the exhibition series, at four wins to three.

The regular season, however, is a much different story. The Panthers are just 2-6 against the Bills over their eight “real” matchups.

What to watch for

We’ll get our longest look at the team’s starters on Friday night. That, of course, will include quarterback Baker Mayfield—who was named the winner of Carolina’s quarterback competition on Monday.

The most intriguing position group to watch on offense will be the wide receivers. In addition to seeing how much chemistry Mayfield has built with his new buddies, there’s a budding race for playing time between Terrace Marshall Jr., Rashard Higgins and Shi Smith.

As far as the defense goes, they won’t be seeing Buffalo’s starters in this one. But we should keep an eye on which defensive backs leave a lasting impression, specifically with cornerback Tae Hayes making an unlikely case for himself.
