QBE Shootout: Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter paired for first time since 2008

Ian Poulter said: “In this kind of format you can lean on your partner and he can lean on me and if you get on a roll you can shoot lights out.”

NAPLES, Fla. — Eleven years ago they were newcomers to the PGA Tour’s silly season, still without a U.S. Open title or any Ryder Cup fame or car collection.

This week Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter would be considered parental by many of the players in the 2019 QBE Shootout field at the Tiburón Golf Club at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort.

The Englishman (Poulter) and Ulsterman (McDowell) are a combined 83-years-old but still remain determined to make additions to their resumés.

The previous results are impressive, for Poulter, $45 million in golf earnings, including $25 million in the U.S. Best known for making clutch putts in the Ryder Cup, he’s also an avid car collector with 14 Ferraris, Bentleys or Aston Martins sitting at home in Orlando.

McDowell is just a step behind with $30 million-plus in golf winnings that ranked No. 1 in Northern Ireland until Rory McIlroy joined the PGA Tour. McDowell won the U.S. Open in 2010, his fourth tour title last year in Puerto Rico, and owns two of Florida’s most successful restaurants, Nona Blue, in Orlando and Ponte Vedra Beach.

The pair, playing together for the first time since 2008, have enjoyed their success in the Shootout.

Poulter won in 2010 with Dustin Johnson, while McDowell has finished second the last two years with Shane Lowry and Emiliano Grillo.

“I mean, the game’s good with a little time off,” Poulter said. “Obviously this kind of format you can lean on your partner and he can lean on me and if you get on a roll you can shoot lights out.”

“Certainly one of my favorite weeks of the year is coming down here, but I haven’t played a whole lot the last three months so I’m starting to gear back up with Kapalua and Sony coming up in the new year,” McDowell said.

McDowell and Poulter are playing with the two youngest players, rookie stars Matt Wolff, 20, and Norway’s Viktor Hovland, 22.

Both of the youngsters are excited to be paired with the veterans.

“Young guys come out and fire quickly but it’s really cool for us to be able to play with guys we’ve watched on TV,” Wolff said.”I watched Ian since I started golf and it’s cool to see all the generations play together.

“Anyone who plays golf knows the name Greg Norman, but to be able to meet him (Tuesday) night and talk with him a little, special.”

“I was too young to watch Norman but I certainly watched a lot of Graeme, Poulter and Charles Howell,” Hovland said. “It’s cool to be part of the next lineage of players.”

McDowell and Poulter accept the aging notoriety.

“Poults and I are getting to that stage in life where we’ll be the older guys in the field,” McDowell said.

Poulter interrupted, “I’ve had the tag already, oldest man and that’s a bit scary.”

Nevertheless, the passion remains intact.

“Desire is still there, very much so,” said McDowell, who lists playing in last summer’s The Open Championship at Royal Portrush near his home as one of the highlights of his career. “We both work as hard as we ever did,”

“If the desire drops off, you won’t see me playing golf, period,” Poulter said. “I want to feel competitive because I have never worked harder and I’m just as hungry as my first year on tour in ’99.”

Poulter enjoys discussing his car collection and comparing himself to other collectors.

“Not even close to the top, I would be in like the eighth division,” he said. “I’m entry level behind car collectors, real car collectors and super special car collectors.”

Which Jets player would you most want on the Ravens’ roster?

A look at the undisputed star of the Jets defense and a player that would be an asset were he a member of the Baltimore Ravens roster

The New York Jets come to M&T Bank today to take on the Baltimore Ravens in Week 15. It’s a game that looks like a bloodbath waiting to happen on the surface but that doesn’t mean New York is devoid of talent.

When looking over the Jets’ roster, they have quite a few key players but just haven’t managed to put it all together yet. Partially due to an injury report that looks more like a league transaction list than an individual team’s game status and partially due to the team still figuring out all the parts in between their stars.

But one player stands out above the rest and is a player that would look good in purple. In fact, it’s one player that could very well end up in Baltimore next season given how the Jets were shopping him earlier this season.

New York, for reasons best known only to themselves, were entertaining trade offers for safety Jamal Adams prior to the deadline. He remained with the team, but the Ravens were among the teams interested in making a deal. If they were open to the idea during the season, it makes sense they’ll draw more offers in the offseason.

This is Adams’ third season with the Jets after they spent the sixth-overall pick on him in the 2017 NFL Draft. He was fairly quiet as a rookie but has stepped up in a big way in the last two campaigns. He has 18 passes defended in his last 28 games along with two interceptions. One of these he took all the way for a touchdown. This season he has also improved his play in pass coverage too.

In 2018, he was allowing 55% of passes sent in his direction to completed for an average of 12.3 yards per completion and 6.8 yards per target. This year, he’s allowing only 51.7% of the passes to be completed, at a 9.2 YPC and 4.8 YPT average.

Adams has also been used more to apply pressure on the quarterback this year, with 65 blitzes in 12 games compared to 69 in 16 a year ago. This usage has seen him rack up 6.5 sacks this season, the most among all safeties. Adams has become a much surer tackler too. In 2018, 9.4% of his tackle attempts were missed. This year he knocked this average down to 4.5%.

Adams is likely to be missing on Thursday night as he nurses a foot injury. It’s possible then that he has already played his last game for the Jets, especially if teams show a renewed interest in trading for him this offseason. But don’t be terribly shocked if Baltimore is among those calling New York to see if they can make a deal happen as they look to bolster their secondary further thanks to an expected large amount of cap space available.

The Ravens have got by at safety with Earl Thomas, Chuck Clark, and Anthony Levine ever since Tony Jefferson and DeShon Elliott were lost for the season in October.

Clark has shown vast improvement after a shaky rookie season in which he gave up 11 receptions for 123 yards and three touchdowns in pass coverage. But Adams offers so much versatility in both pass and rush defense that a defensive mind like coordinator Wink Martindale would probably think all his Christmases had come at once if Baltimore were to land him.

The asking price is still likely to be high, but maybe Adams’ disenchantment with the Jets could force them to accept a more palatable offer. Adams was angry that the Jets had seemingly gone behind his back in shopping him.  Adams and Thomas together, in concert with Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey at cornerback, would make the Ravens’ secondary one to be rightly feared.

Notre Dame/Iowa State: Camping World Bowl Watchability Rankings

You can go over recruiting rankings all you want and look at records but I really do buy into Iowa State’s coaching staff.  It’s not a mistake that Matt Campbell gets linked to NFL jobs an incredible amount despite his record being far from outstanding.

Pretty much no Notre Dame fans are excited that a 10-2 season ends in Orlando for the Camping World Bowl against an unranked 7-5 Iowa State team, but it’s a Notre Dame game at the end of the day and the last one we’ll have until they open the 2020 season against Navy in Ireland.

We’ll all soak it up, even if commenters here and on the message boards are full of those complaining and claiming they’ll protest it by not watching.

The rest of the nation has been weighing in on all bowl games though and ranking them from worst matchup or the least-watchable to the best match-up and most-watchable.

Where does Notre Dame’s contest against the pass-happy Cyclones rank?

Here’s what everyone else says and remember, the ranking is out of the 39 total bowl games this season:

Broncos injuries: Noah Fant returns to practice
