Jury clears New Jersey high school baseball coach sued for telling player to slide

After seven years, former high school baseball coach John Sauk has finally been freed from the legal entanglements connected to his advice for a former player to slide into third base.

A seven-year legal entanglement over a junior varsity player’s slide into third base may be at an end. On Monday afternoon, 31-year-old John Suk was finally found not liable for the injuries suffered by former Bound Brook High School baseball player Jake Mesar.

The lawsuit in question was connected to an incident where Suk told Mesar to continue running and then slide into third base. He did, but suffered a devastating ankle break in the process of his slide. Mesar and his family later filed a lawsuit seeking damages from Suk and the school district, seeking more than $1 million citing Suk’s alleged negligence.

To be fair, Mesar’s ankle injury proved to be horrific. Here’s more on how that turned out from New Jersey Advance Media:

Even after three surgeries, the ankle was not improving — one doctor even presented amputation as a possible outcome. A specialist from the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, Robert Rozbruch, found post-traumatic arthritis and signs of necrosis — evidence the bone was dying.

Mesar needed two more surgeries, including one to inject stem cells into the ankle tissue, and he was fit with an external fixator, a stabilizing frame to keep the bones properly positioned. The injury improved, but Rozbruch told the once-active teenager to avoid high-impact activities. Even jogging.

One can understand why Mesar and his family could be upset, but the lawsuit’s conclusion now firmly holds that concern is misplaced.

“(If he had lost) The coaching profession would be under heavy scrutiny for everything that happens’, Suk told New Jersey Advance Media.

“Coaches are going to have to have insurance like doctors have for malpractice. School districts are not going to want to take the risk of having sports.”

Clearly, the judges felt that potential damage was too great to find in favor of Mesar, virtually no matter what happened to the teen.

Harry Hiestand clarifies why Bears switched Cody Whitehair and James Daniels

The Bears decided to switch Cody Whitehair back to center and James Daniels back to left guard to provide balance on the offensive line.

[jwplayer rzKgNnfu-ThvAeFxT]

Following Sunday’s win over the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy didn’t provide any clarification as to why they decided to switch Cody Whitehair back to center and push James Daniels back to left guard.

But when offensive line coach Harry Hiestand met with the media Monday, he provided as much context as we’re likely to get publicly.

While Nagy nor Hiestand would blame Daniels for the offensive line’s struggles this season, they did point to his inexperience as a reason why they made the switch. Although you have to wonder what took so long to make the decision with the line struggling as long as it has been all season.

Hiestand said having Whitehair at center “balances us out and gives us a steadying factor in there.”

While communication calls seemed to be more effective with Whitehair at center, he wasn’t without his faults. He struggled with snapping the football, something he hadn’t done since the Pro Bowl back in January. Mitchell Trubisky saved some of those poor snaps, but Whitehair vowed that it’ll get better as he gets back into the swing of things.

As for whether Daniels could eventually wind up back at center, it sounds like the Bears are comfortable with him at left guard for now.

“Right now he’s where [he] is best for us,” Hiestand said. “But you never know with that.”

Dolphins sign LB Jake Carlock to 2019 practice squad

The Miami Dolphins have added rookie LB Jake Carlock to their practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins have filled the vacancy on their practice squad as of yesterday. Miami filled the open spot by signing free agent rookie linebacker Jake Carlock. Carlock, a product of Long Island University, spent the first half of the 2019 season on the New York Giants’ practice squad before being cut. Carlock has not logged any regular season action to this point in his career, although he did announce himself on an NFL field during the preseason this past August against the New York Jets.

Carlock tipped a pass on the edge of the pocket, leapt up to intercept the football and ran it back for a defensive score — an impressive display of athleticism.

Carlock joins fellow rookie linebacker Terrill Hanks on Miami’s practice squad as undrafted rookie linebackers on the unit.

Cowboys return home after rough road loss; Titans won’t be a walk in the park either

WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7pm (MST)

WHERE: Laramie, WY • Arena-Auditorium (11,612)

TV: MW Network

Live Broadcast: Live Audio

SERIES RECORD: Wyoming leads the series 5-0.

ODDS: Wyoming -2

Preview

In the sixth meeting of these two squads, both look to get back into a winning rhythm. The Titans will look to find its first win of the season, while the Cowboys want to bounce back from being stifled by South Carolina over the weekend.

Here are three keys to a Wyoming win tonight in the Double-A:

Be Aggressive

The Cowboy’s presence on the block has not been strong in its first two games of the season. They have been out-rebounded 71-49 with South Carolina doubling Wyoming’s output on Sunday with 41.

Hunter Thompson is averaging four rebounds more a contest this season at 6.5 rpg. However, the six-foot-ten forward is only averaging 3.5 points a game. While his presence is growing down low on the boards, the eight points per game from last season are missing. Along with sophomore Austin Mueller, Thompson will be needed to take more attempts on the block in order to get the Cowboys off to a solid start.

Wyoming has been without Tyler Mormon (6-foot-9, Jr.) who has been in concussion protocol since the exhibition game on Oct. 30th. If Mormon can make it back tonight, it could give the Cowboys another option in the frontcourt.

Hendricks Sighting

After bursting for over 20 points in the exhibition, senior guard Jake Hendricks has gone cold. He’s hitting just 20-percent from beyond the arc and averaging just three points an outing.

The reality is, he’s taken nine shots and made two of them to start the season. Hendricks was picked to be a breakout player for the Cowboys this season. He’ll need to have more attempts in order to have an impact not just on tonight’s game against the Titans, but looking ahead to the rest of the season.

Rely on the D

The Cowboys held Idaho State to the lowest point total for a Wyoming team in over 50 years. And South Carolina just looked that impressive with their trio of guards putting up double digits each.

So, maybe the 66 points against the Gamecocks is an outlier and tonight will be another night for the Cowboys to display what their strength will be this season.

Against Idaho State, Wyoming scored 15 points off turnovers.

The Titans have three guards averaging double digits, with senior Austen Awosika leading scorers with 12.9 ppg.

Prediction:

Wyoming 55, CSU Fullerton 53

Odds: Hawai’i by -7

Will Hawai’i finally win it big in Vegas losing five straight at UNLV?

This will be the third edition of “The Ninth Island Showdown” and so far the home team has been able to keep it every time. There is no doubt Las Vegas has many distractions for players to lose some focus on the game. But Hawai’i has to put on their blinders and make sure they are on the same page entering Saturday afternoon’s contest. One of the main questions coming into this week is does Hawai’i head coach Nick Rolovich let redshirt freshmen Chevan Coideiro start two weeks in a row or start Cole McDonald who seems to have a good record on the road.

Keys to Hawaii’s victory

Keep UNLV guessing

Whether it is who’s starting at QB or the play calling on offense, the Rainbow Warriors need to keep the UNLV defense on their heels and score a bunch of touchdowns not field goals in the first half. That will give the defense a little cushion to be more aggressive in their zone blitzes and get some sacks that the defense is lacking all year long.

Reed-ing what the defense gives you

Miles Reed has been the missing element in the early part of the season. But now that the opposing defenses sends eight defenders back to cover the speedsters Cedric Byrd, JoJo Ward and company they leave gaps open for Reed to explode downfield and get huge chunks of yards. With the RPO in this run and shoot offense the defense also has to account for the elusive QB McDonald or Coideiro so Reed can get to the second level if given the ball.

Picking on the D

UNLV likes to do some jet sweeps and give their playmaker Charles Williams the ball and gain big chunks of yards pressing the defense. They know the ‘Bows D are 113th in the nation in rush defense and it will be Hawaii’s linemen and linebackers that will have to contain Williams or we may see another shootout like last week against SJSU. Also so far this year DB’s Ikem Okeke and Kai Kaneshiro have three interceptions and two respectively. Look for them closing in on receivers and maybe deflecting balls for more picks from the UNLV freshmen QB Kenyon Oblad.

Prediction

This will be the fourth MW team that has designated their Homecoming game with Hawai’i. The ‘Bows will love for the third time to ruin the home team’s night and sending the Rebel crowd home early and the large sea of green and black happy heading back to the hotels and casinos.

Hawai’i 38 UNLV 28

Latest FPI projections from ESPN have Dolphins picking 4th in 2020

ESPN’s latest projection of the final standings courtesy of their Football Power Index forecasts Miami to hold the 4th pick in 2020 Draft.

The Miami Dolphins pulled off a stunner this past weekend in Indianapolis — aided by the Colts’ absence of starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett to an ACL injury. The win brought the Dolphins to 2-7 on the season and effectively ended the team’s hopes and dreams of landing the 1st-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Dolphins now trail the Cincinnati Bengals by two games in the race for the top spot and each team is trending in opposite directions — Miami is surging with confident play, while the Bengals just got stomped by the Ravens in an embarrassing defeat.

ESPN’s Football Power Index agrees: Miami’s odds of walking away with the top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft are now pretty slim. Two weeks ago, the Dolphins were given 66% odds to land the first pick. Now? That number sits at 12%. The latest projection forecasts Miami to pick 4th: behind the winless Bengals, the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants.

No problem. Miami will have ample opportunity to do business with either Washington or New York to ensure they get a top quarterback prospect, should they feel it necessary to land “their guy”. And the deeper into the process things get, the more it seems LSU’s Joe Burrow is the emerging favorite to be the player who demands selection with the top pick this offseason.

Miami will have opportunities to win a few more games along the way: ESPN’s projection has the Dolphins finishing the season at 4-12 and even if the Dolphins went 5-11, Miami would fall no lower than 6th in the ESPN projections — losing ground to two more teams who already have young quarterbacks in the New York Jets (Sam Darnold) and Arizona Cardinals (Kyler Murray).

Nets bogged down by foul troubles against Jazz

The Nets gave the Utah Jazz far too many chances at the free-throw line, which was part of what cost Brooklyn the game.

The Brooklyn Nets were more efficient from the free-throw line (84%) than the Utah Jazz (77.1%) on Tuesday. But Brooklyn being more effective at the charity stripe only means so much when the opposition has 10 more free-throw attempts in the course of the game.

With the Nets losing by five to the Jazz, those extra free throws were made all the difference, as Utah knocked down 27 free throws to Brooklyn’s 21 in the 119-115 finish.

The Jazz took 35 free throws and were fouled by Brooklyn 29 times, while Utah only fouled the Nets 18 times. Jarrett accounted for six of those fouls and Joe Harris had five. Spencer Dinwiddie had four, as did Kyrie Irving, though two of his came when the Nets needed to foul Utah late.

Needless to say, Kenny Atkinson wasn’t pleased the Jazz had so many chances at the line.

… I would say the other thing that kind of irks me is giving up 35 free throws. So we played hard, we competed, but now we gotta add understand how to play without fouling.

Watch: Eagles WR DeSean Jackson lightly jogging 1-week after abdominal surgery

Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson lightly jogging 1-week after abdominal surgery

If DeSean Jackson’s 2019 season is indeed over having core muscle surgery, the Eagles star wide receiver isn’t acting like it. Hoping to get back for the playoffs, Jackson has already started lightly jogging one week after having surgery on his abdominal area.

Jackson was initially given a four to six week recovery period and even if he takes the normal eight weeks for core muscle recovery, he could still possibly return for an Eagles playoff run if the team handles its business in his absence.

Jerod Mayo explains how he positively utilizes social media for Patriots players

Times are changing in professional sports and social media is rapidly intertwining itself with the players.

Times are changing in professional sports and social media is rapidly intertwining itself with the players.

The NFL has seen its fair share of ups and downs with various social media platforms and it can sometimes be a detriment to players’ careers. When it comes to the New England Patriots — social media is very seldom used in a negative fashion.

Patriots linebacker coach Jerod Mayo has found a way utilize it as an inspirational and positive platform for his players.

“I read a lot,” Mayo told reporters during a conference call on Tuesday. “Sometimes people need those nuggets. I don’t like to post about just things, material things. I just like to drop little nuggets of wisdom, and I’m hopeful, honestly, that my linebackers see those posts. It definitely helps motivate me.

“You know, the season is long. Sometimes you need those words of encouragement. It’s definitely an up-and-down season, even though we’re sitting here at 8-1. Sometimes you’ve got to take a step back and realize that, and some of those quotes helps with that.”

While many coaches try to prevent players from overly using social media, Mayo found a unique and effective approach.

“I think it’s by a player-by-player basis,” Mayo continued. “I remember when I first came into the league, you think about the room. It was Junior Seau, Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi — guys who had flip phones. They had flip phones for the longest time. They still had Blackberries in their pockets. So they weren’t even really thinking about social media, so when you would go in the locker room, I would say that just the overall vibe, you were in there playing cards and things like that.

“Now, the younger generation, they’re checking their social media and things like that. But I think the players around here do a good job, when they’re in the building, of really focusing on football. But if I had to say something that’s changed, I’m sure when they’re on their phones, they’re checking that stuff. As far as how it kind of affects them — what people say on social media and things like that — I really don’t think they take much into that. You know, everyone isn’t a Patriots fan, so I think they realize that.”
