Injury report: Packers, 49ers both healthy going into NFC title game

The NFC Championship Game will feature two healthy teams battling for a spot in the Super Bowl.

Two healthy rosters will clash in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.

The Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers reported little to no injury concerns on Friday’s injury report.

The Packers listed fullback Danny Vitale as questionable with a knee injury, while the 49ers didn’t list a single player on their final injury report of the week.

The Packers had only five players limited during Friday’s practice, and three – Tramon Williams, Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis – are only listed for veteran rest. Vitale and outside linebacker Preston Smith (ankle) were limited with injuries. Everyone else on the roster, including defensive lineman Kenny Clark and receivers Geronimo Allison and Allen Lazard, practiced in full on Friday.

The 49ers listed only one player as limited at practice: linebacker Kwon Alexander. Everyone else, including outside linebacker Dee Ford, practiced fully on Friday.

Both teams are in ideal health for this point of the season, and neither team will have much of an injury excuse entering Sunday’s title game.

The winner goes to Super Bowl LIV.

The Packers still have a chance to activate defensive back Raven Greene, who practiced with the team the last two weeks. He remains on injured reserve but could return Saturday. Greene would be the 53rd player on the Packers roster.

Celtics’ Grant Williams calls the new WNBA CBA a ‘historic’ moment

The WNBA and WNBPA reached a landmark agreement this week to provide additional financial compensation to players for years to come.

The WNBA and the WNBPA reached an agreement this week on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement beginning with the 2020 season, pending ratification by the players the league’s Board of Governors.

For the first time in WNBA history, the average cash compensation for players will exceed six figures, averaging nearly $130,000. The change will net an increase for all players, from rookies to veterans under the new agreement, which runs through 2027.

Under terms of the new agreement, the top players in the WNBA will be able to earn cash compensation in excess of $500,000, more than tripling the maximum compensation under the prior deal. Other top players will have an opportunity to earn between $200,000 and $300,000.

The news of the CBA quickly spread as it marked a landmark agreement for the sport. In addition to the financial benefits, players now will receive their full salary while on maternity leave. The new deal also gives players better travel accommodations and enhanced mental health benefits.

While the WNBA players approved of the new agreement, the decision was met with universal praise from players in the NBA and others around the game of basketball.

“It’s historic. Honestly, it’s something that, for me, I’ve always been a huge advocate for empowering women and all that they do,” Boston Celtics rookie Grant Williams told Rookie Wire. “The fact that they have a CBA now that allows them to not only get paid on maternity leave but also get a salary to support themselves and their families and future generations.”

Previously, WNBA players received around 20% of the shared revenue within the league, compared to 50% in the NBA. As a result, WNBA players earned anywhere from roughly $41,000 to $117,000 per season. Some NBA players make that, and more, in one single game.

Players would often be forced to play overseas for additional income since the salaries in the WNBA were so low. After playing during the WNBA season in the summer, and then suiting up overseas in the offseason, some women played upward of 11 months out of the year.

Under the new agreement, though, a new 50-50 revenue sharing structure will be implemented with the 2021 season, based on the league achieving revenue growth targets from broadcast agreements, marketing partnerships and licensing deals.

“The fact that they have to travel 11 months of the year without seeing their family, going overseas and now they have enough, hopefully, sustainable income to play in the WNBA and be able to start something fresh,” Williams said. “You get to see the stars in Breanna Stewart, Brittney Griner, A’ja Wilson and Diamond DeShields and it’s a bigger stage.

“Now, it brings more traction to the sport. Now, young females are going to look and say, ‘I want to be a professional basketball player.’ Not only just because they are going to be able to secure themselves for the future but also because the sport is going to be so [visible]. I’m just excited about the future and the potential of that league.”

The agreement this week between the WNBA and WNBPA proved to be monumental as the league continues to grow in popularity. The WNBA faced several issues heading into the CBA negotiations with much of those centered around financial compensation.

The new deal provides an opportunity to continue to grow and is a step in the right direction to give the women of the sport the foundation to have long, successful careers in the league.

Report: Anthony Davis game-time decision Saturday at Rockets

The Los Angeles Lakers star has missed the last four games with a severe bruise on his butt, stemming from a fall on Jan. 7.

Anthony Davis hasn’t played in four games and there’s still a chance that he doesn’t go for the Los Angeles Lakers for a fifth straight, but that question will be answered in the minutes before tip-off of Saturday night’s ABC primetime game against the Houston Rockets.

Davis, who is officially considered questionable, will determine whether he will play on Saturday after his pregame workout, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. Despite missing the last four games, Davis is still third in the NBA in total blocks. Davis is also the Lakers leading scorer in terms of points per game, averaging 27.1 points.

Saturday night’s showdown with the Rockets is the first of three meetings between the two teams this season. The Rockets, although they’re primed to be a playoff team and are currently 5th in the West, have lost their last two games.

The Lakers themselves are coming off of their first loss to a team below-.500 and Saturday will be the start of a five-game trip.

Former Alabama running back Derrick Henry has made a name for himself in the 2019-2020 NFL Playoffs by way of his size, speed and force.

There are plenty of jokes and memes on social media about how strong Henry is, especially what he does to defenders after taking a handoff.

Well, now you can see what the former Heisman-winning back does during practice in order to achieve those devastating stiff arms.

In the video, you can see the Tennessee Titans head coach, Mike Vrabel, trying to punch the ball out of Henry’s grip.

However, the main piece in the video is the coach holding a long stick with a helmet at the end of it, this is to mimic a defender getting close and attempting a tackle.

As he’s running, he is hitting the helmet to work on the technique of his stiff arm.

The drill looks to be cut short because Henry’s strength was just too much for the practice tool, the helmet pops right off of the stick and goes rolling.

One can only imagine what damage that stiff arm would have done if it was on an actual defender.

Henry looks to lead his team to the Super Bowl this season, but clearly has his sights on the task at hand, the AFC Championship vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

Oklahoma’s Jordan Parker has reportedly entered the transfer portal

The transfer portal is open in Norman, Oklahoma. Oklahoma defensive back Jordan Parker is the latest to enter it.

The transfer portal is open in Norman, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma defensive back Jordan Parker has become the 12th player to enter the transfer portal and look for other options since the start of the 2019 season’s fall camp, according to a report from The Athletic’s Jason Kersey.

Parker later sent out a tweet thanking his former coaches.

Since last Friday, five Oklahoma defenders have entered the transfer portal. Parker followed defensive linemen Troy James, linebackers Ryan Jones and Levi Draper, as well as RUSH linebacker Mark Jackson.

The Pittsburg, California native was a four-star recruit out of high school in 2016. Parker started his freshman year before being setback by multiple injuries, making 23 appearances in four seasons. He finishes his Oklahoma career with 50 total tackles and five pass break-ups.

Sophomore Jaden Davis surpassed Parker on the depth chart.

At this rate, Oklahoma could be down to the most, not all, returning players of the 2019 two-deep on defense and newcomers.

James Harden, Houston Rockets move up NBA merchandise lists

Both James Harden and the Houston Rockets are steadily moving up the NBA’s official lists of player and team merchandise sales.

Both James Harden as an individual and the Houston Rockets as an organization each moved up slightly on the NBA’s official lists of most popular player jerseys and team merchandise.

Sales were calculated based on sales at the official NBA Store from October 2019 through December 2019. It was the league’s first sales update since the end of the 2018-19 regular season.

Relative to a year ago, Harden moved up from No. 6 to No. 5 in jersey sales, while the Rockets edged up from No. 8 to No. 7 in team sales.

The Rockets are one of only three Western Conference teams in the top 10 in sales, joining the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors.

When compared to sales from two seasons ago (2017-18), Harden and the Rockets have risen from No. 9 and No. 10, respectively, to their current placements at No. 5 and No. 7 in the league.

In part, the higher 2019-20 sales could reflect Houston’s offseason modifications to its uniforms and the addition of a new secondary logo.

They also do not show any negative sales impact from the China controversy involving GM Daryl Morey, which took place in early October.

[lawrence-related id=18206,17954,10487,17721]

Newcomer Russell Westbrook has seen his sales fall off over that same period, going from No. 6 and No. 7 in the two prior seasons to No. 13 in jersey sales in 2019-20. However, that decline could be because he’s splitting sales in Houston with another former MVP in Harden.

After Westbrook’s departure, the Oklahoma City Thunder have dropped from No. 7 in team merchandise sales over each of the past two seasons to out of the top 10 entirely, which likely reflects the team’s absence of star power following the trades of Westbrook and Paul George.

As for basketball, it’ll be a star-studded matchup Saturday night when Harden, Westbrook, and the Rockets (26-14) host LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the Western Conference-leading Los Angeles Lakers (33-8) in the first ABC primetime game of the 2019-20 season.

James and Davis rank No. 1 and No. 8, respectively, on the list of 2019-20 jersey sales, while the Lakers are again No. 1 in overall team sales.
