Prospect for the Pack: Oklahoma LB Kenneth Murray

Breaking down potential Packers draft pick Kenneth Murray, an explosive playmaking linebacker from Oklahoma.

The Green Bay Packers must use the 2020 NFL Draft to provide the finishing touches on a team that won 13 regular-season games and got within one game of the Super Bowl during Matt LaFleur’s first season as head coach.

Between now and the draft, Packers Wire will periodically break down one top prospect fitting the Packers’ roster needs.

Up next is Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray.

What he can do

– Play speed is insane. Some guys look like they’re playing the game at a different speed than everyone else. He’s one of those guys
– Speed causes big problems. Often beats guys to spots to blow up plays
– Closing speed in space is a “wow” trait
– Wrecks the horizontal game with sideline-to-sideline speed
– Takes confident and aggressive angles defending the edge
– Explosiveness makes him a devastating delayed blitzer and quarterback spy
– Erases throws to the flat
– Athleticism and long arms help him shrink passing windows
– Can be a violent, body-shattering tackler. Crazy arm length provides wide tackling radius
– Shedding blocks is a work in progress but tape is littered with examples of slipping past blocks at second level
– Competitive fire always burns white-hot
– Might need development retreating into coverage but he’s a heat-seeking missile when playing downhill
– Movement ability creates elite man-to-man coverage potential
– Consistent, easy-to-see improvement over college career

How he fits

Adding Murray would instantly give the Packers a blend of speed and playmaking ability that the inside linebacker position has lacked in Green Bay for years. There could some early growing pains against the run but his explosiveness and range should immediately translate to the pro game and fill one of the defense’s biggest needs. The Packers require a playmaker in the middle of the defense to go from good to great. The wanted ad reads a lot like Murray’s resume.

NFL comp

Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith. Both are explosive, long-armed linebackers with elite play speed and playmaking ability on the move. Murray isn’t as refined as a player overall but his athleticism, frame and competitiveness provide the same Pro Bowl potential.

Where Packers could get him

If he blows up the Scouting Combine, Murray could be gone by 30. Right now, he’s a popular pick for the Packers at 30 in mock drafts based on a combination of evaluation, positional value and team need. Murray to the Packers has to be considered a strong fit at the end of the first round.

10 places that prove Grand Rapids is the craft beverage capital of the U.S.

Beer City USA has an ale trail with some 80 breweries, but the city’s libation scene extends far beyond beer into everything craft. Sip your way around town to sample wild fermented wine, Michigan apple cider, award-winning spirits, locally roasted coffee and organic kombucha with a twist.

Grand Rapids has the well-earned nickname “Beer City USA” (its first brewery was established in 1836), but this Midwestern city’s penchant for craft beverage extends far beyond the brew. Michigan’s second largest city has one of the fastest growing economies in the country, with a steady influx of young professionals and entrepreneurs fueling this thirst for all things craft.

From the brewery that helped put Grand Rapids on the craft beer map to kombucha brewed with sound therapy techniques, there’s something to drink no matter your tastes. Here are 10 of the city’s can’t-miss craft beverage producers.

Founders Brewing Co.

You can’t talk about craft beverages in Grand Rapids without mentioning Founders. Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers brewed their first beers under the Founders label in 1997, right as America’s first microbrewing boom took a turn toward bust, with beer sales in decline.

On the verge of bankruptcy in 2001, the pair decided to sell their filter and start making more experimental beers they loved. Their first bourbon barrel-aged beer debuted later that year, and the rest is history.

Since then, Founders has been ranked among the best breweries in the world and has helped kick off the barrel-aged beer and session IPA trends in the U.S. Their spacious Grand Rapids taproom, where visitors can sample brews available nowhere else, overlooks the classic brewhouse.

Madcap Coffee

You won’t find any sugared-up, whipped cream-topped Frappuccinos at this Grand Rapids coffee institution. The folks behind the Michigan roaster taste more than 3,000 coffees each year in search of the perfect combination of taste, expression and consistency.

Choose from fresh roasted coffees for coffee regions around the globe, brewed how you like. The Madcap menu also includes a wide selection of herbal teas, infused by the baristas to the second, as well as seasonal specialty drinks.

Madcap has even partnered with Long Road Distillers – the next libation haven on our list – to produce a coffee amaro made with Madcap’s Ethiopian Reko beans.

Long Road Distillers

This Grand Rapids distillery has twice been named the best craft specialty spirits distillery in the nation (in 2017 and 2018) in the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, and it only takes a couple of sips to see why.

Co-founders Kyle Van Strien and Jon O’Connor opened Long Road as the first distillery in Grand Rapids’ history. Each spirit is distilled onsite using ingredients sourced in West Michigan. Their aquavit has been named Best in Show by the American Craft Spirits Association.

Other standouts include a bright and tart Michigan cherry liqueur made from Michigan-grown Montmorency cherries and a Michigan apple brandy distilled from Michigan apples and The Peoples Cider Co. (also on our list) cider.

Long Road Distillers’ West Side distillery and tasting room serves farm-to-table fare to go along with spirit flights or cocktails. Don’t miss the fried biscuits with jalapeño honey, green onion and pimento cheese.

Brewery Vivant

One of Grand Rapids’ most beloved brewpubs (named one of America’s 10 best brewpubs twice in a row) is also the world’s first LEED-certified microbrewery. Housed in a refurbished funeral home in the East Hills of Grand Rapids, Brewery Vivant specializes in Belgian and French-style beers brewed with locally sourced ingredients.

Stepping inside the space feels like entering a Belgian monastery, complete with a stained glass window above the bar. Visitors will find over a dozen small batch beers on tap, including local favorites like Farm Hand and Big Red Coq, paired with scratch-made French and Belgian favorites (escargot, Belgian frites, coq au vin) and local specialties (beer cheese, duck confit nachos).

Vander Mill

Paul and Amanda Vander Heide started Vander Mill as a small cider mill in 2006. Today, the hard ciders made from pressed Michigan apples can be found in nine states. The ciders are never pasteurized, nor are preservatives introduced.

The Grand Rapids taproom pours nearly two dozen different ciders, ranging from traditional dry and semi-sweet hard ciders to heritage ciders, hopped ciders, barrel-aged ciders and even ciders on nitro.

The apple theme extends to the food menu (where everything is made in-house), with items like cider donut holes and apple pecan cobbler.

Butcher’s Union

This hip West Side restaurant has a simple tagline, “Meat and Whiskey.” The whiskey list here features more than 200 varieties, with both bourbons and Scotch whiskies well represented. Local libations from Long Road Distillers and New Holland Brewery & Distillery make an appearance alongside top-shelf staples.

The cocktail menu is decidedly whiskey-centric as well, with multiple varieties of Old Fashioneds and Manhattans. A Whiskey Flight of the Week introduces diners to new spirits.

The “meat” portion of the menu is loaded with goodies, like roasted pork belly, bacon-wrapped meatloaf and Monte Cristo fried chicken.

Sacred Springs Kombucha

As it has in much of the U.S., the kombucha craze has swept through Grand Rapids in recent years, and the maker of choice around town is Sacred Springs.

Born from a partnership between a classically trained musician and a sound therapist, Sacred Springs organic kombucha gets “infused” with the notes D and A, thought to be building blocks of metaphysical ingredients. Other tones get overlaid depending on the flavor.

You don’t have to be a believer in such metaphysical principals to enjoy a lightly fizzy glass on draft in Sacred Springs’ Grand Rapids taproom, where flavors might include smoked green tea, jasmine, vanilla mushroom or apple cinnamon.

Arktos Meadery

The history of fermenting honey dates back more than 9,000 years. While Arktos Meadery joined the game a bit more recently (in 2014), the company is already beginning to make its mark on the Grand Rapids beverage scene.

The meadery is planning to open a newer, bigger facility and taproom on the popular Bridge Street in 2020. This will allow Arktos to introduce even more people to their meads, such as Queen Bee, made with Michigan wildflower honey aged in custom oak, or Enchanted Horse cyser, made with honeycrisp apple cider and local wildflower honey.

Native Species Winery / Speciation Artisan Ales

This urban winery specializes in crafting wines from Michigan-grown grapes crushed by foot and wildly fermented with minimal intervention. The wines are sealed in bottles before fermentation is complete, creating a naturally spritzy finished product.

The winery was born from another Grand Rapids trendsetter, this time in the realm of suds. Speciation Artisan Ales, founded in 2016, has already earned a name for its wild fermented beer.

Wine and beer lovers can sip these creations in Speciation’s cozy taproom. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food, or order a Nordic-style hot dog made from locally raised lamb and beef.

The Peoples Cider Co.

This West Side cidery began in the kitchen of Jason Lummen’s one-bedroom Heartside apartment in 2002. And he remains the owner, bartender and cider maker behind The Peoples Cider Co., which has grown into a new tasting room on Leonard.

Where most ciders are finished in a matter of weeks, Jason’s ciders take about five months to produce, including a minimum of six weeks in oak barrels. Apples come from Hill Brothers Orchards in West Michigan’s Fruit Ridge and hops from the head brewer at The Mitten Brewing Company just down the street.

So far, options include a flagship dry draft cider, a heavy-hitting whiskey barrel-aged cider, a dry-hopped mead and a cider flavored with Michigan cherries.

Shad Khan says he’s ready to take full responsibility for whatever results 2020 brings

A lot of fans weren’t happy with Shad Khan’s decision to keep coach Doug Marrone and general manager Dave Caldwell last month as both have come up short of expectations in 2018-19. However, with the success they had in 2017 still in mind, Khan didn’t want to shake things up too much this offseason and elected just to get rid of front office executive Tom Coughlin, giving Caldwell and Marrone more freedom with just ownership over them when it comes to personnel decisions.

“My feeling is that we can return to that place [the success of 2017] and go much faster to where we want to be if we can keep some things intact for 2020,” Khan said this week in his interview with Black News Channel. “The results are going to speak for themselves a year from now, and we will all know if this is the right approach I took, and I will take full responsibility for it.”

The decision to keep Caldwell is especially baffling to fans as the veteran general manager will be entering his seventh season. Since being named general manager in 2013, the 2017 season is the only season in which he has put together a winning product while the rest have been double-digit loss seasons.

As for Marrone, he doesn’t deserve nearly the amount of blame of those in the front office and Khan, however, some of his decisions haven’t benefited the team all that much like the swing and miss on offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. Under DeFilippo, the Jags offense finished 26th in points (18.8 PPG) and 20th in yards (341.8 YPG) last year, which caused Marrone and him to mutually part ways last month.

The Jags’ defense also hasn’t really shown the growth fans would like either under one of Marrone’s lieutenants in defensive coordinator Todd Wash. Although the case could be made that injuries hurt the Jags’ defense last year, there has been a lack of adaptation on Wash’s part, yet, somehow Marrone has let him stick around.

When looking at the combination of all these issues fans feel Khan would’ve clearly been better off cutting his losses and starting over, but obviously, he feels making it back to the postseason is easier than they do. Ultimately, time will tell which side is truly right, but if Khan is wrong, fans will be sure to remind him of his promise to admit it come January of 2021.

Maurice Jones-Drew slots Jags 2 Clemson Tigers in first 2020 mock

Former Jags RB Maurice Jones-Drew seems to know just what the Jags need and slotted them two stars from the Clemson Tigers’ talented roster.

If there is any analyst who understands the Jacksonville Jaguars issues quite well, it’s former running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who keeps close tabs on them. He recently released his first mock for the 2020 draft this week and it had some rather interesting selections for the Jags, who were able to land two players from the NCAA national championship game.

No. 9 – Isaiah Simmons – S

He’s a freak athlete who can cover and rush the passer.

No. 20 – Tee Higgins

Higgins reminds me of DeAndre Hopkins, as he routinely high-points the ball and wins against defenders by being physical.

I don’t think many Jags fans would complain about that outcome.

Simmons is a player we’ve seen heavily mocked to the Jags over the last few months as he’s arguably the most versatile player in the draft. He played everywhere from safety, to nickelback, to outside and inside linebacker while playing at Clemson. Of those positions, the Jags could use him the most at linebacker, which was deemed our No. 1 position of need for the Jags last month.

Higgins would also be a great addition because he would be nice to pair with Pro Bowl receiver DJ Chark Jr. Additionally, the Jags are likely to part ways with Marqise Lee while Dede Westbrook and Chris Conley will be on the last years of their respective contracts.

At 6-foot-4, 216 pounds, Higgins is a player who has given college defensive backs issues with his long frame, and with Chark by his side, he’d be able to have instant success in Jacksonville. New offensive coordinator Jay Gruden would definitely be game for this selection as it would give him what he had in A.J. Green during his rookie campaign.

Nate Diaz had a very Nate Diaz response to the Miami Herald’s false story about him

The newspaper falsely reported Wednesday that Nate Diaz was arrested in Miami, and the UFC star issued a brief statement.

It was a bizarre Thursday for [autotag]Nate Diaz[/autotag], to say the least.

During the morning hours on the West Coast, the Miami Herald dropped a bombshell by linking Diaz to an alleged domestic violence incident that resulted in his arrest and being “hospitalized after he attacked Miami cops at a police station.”

It didn’t take long for Diaz’s publicist, Zach Rosenfield, to denounce the entire report and threaten legal action. As it turned out, the story indeed was false about one critical detail: It was another MMA fighter, a local guy by the name of Michael Albert Nates, who was involved in the alleged incident. Because “Nates” … Nate … I guess that’s how Diaz got caught up in this? I don’t know, but the Herald retracted its story and issued a correction and an apology.

Although Rosenfield spoke out on Diaz’s behalf almost immediately, we’d yet to hear from Diaz himself until hours later Thursday night, and he responded in a very Nate Diaz way on Instagram.

Being linked to domestic violence by a respected newspaper can’t be fun, but at least Diaz seems to have a good attitude about the whole thing. Knowing that he’s got a solid case for defamation of character and could come into some money as a result of this might also help.

Three reasons why Oklahoma beat Iowa State 90-61

Oklahoma (16-8, 6-5) scored 50 points in the second half to pull away from Iowa State (10-14, 3-8), who trailed the Sooners by just one, to beat the Cyclones 90-61.

DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE

The Sooners came out of the break with a vengeance, shutting down the Cyclones offense and going on a 6-0 run before Iowa State took a timeout to stop the bleeding. Oklahoma forced 15 turnovers and snagged eight steals to help seal an easy win.

SPARK PLUG

Over the past few games, there has been a guy or two that has stepped up and made plays offensively to get the Sooners going. Tonight, that man was alondes Williams. All of his 14 points came in the second half, including an emphatic dunk that got a mostly empty Lloyd Noble Center to their feet.

His play over the past month has shown how deadly he can be, come tournament time.

team basketball

Oklahoma passed the ball well in the blowout over Iowa State, racking up 17 team assists. moving the ball is easy to do when the Sooners have three guys averaging double-digits, but Oklahoma made it look like a walk in the park against the Cyclones. All five starters finished the night in double-digits with Kristian Doolittle leading the way with 20 points.

The Sooners’ next matchup comes on Saturday as they head to Phog Allen Fieldhouse to take on No. 3 Kansas at 11a.m. CT on ESPN.

LeBron James throws down furious slam over Torrey Craig at Denver

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James imposed his will in the third quarter of their game against the Denver Nuggets.

As LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers tried to end their incredible first half of the season on a high note, LeBron showed that even against some of the best defenders in the NBA, even in Year 17, that he can make fearsome defenders look minuscule.

LeBron and the Lakers were locked into a tightly contested match-up, as anticipated, with the No. 2-seeded Denver Nuggets in their final game before the All-Star break. LeBron and Anthony Davis have both played like stars, scoring 15 points apiece, but James did something even bigger with a drive during the 3rd quarter of Wednesday’s game. When he was guarded by one of Denver’s more feared defenders, Torrey Craig, he made the 6-7, 221 lbs., forward look small.

LeBron James and the Lakers currently have a three-game lead over the Nuggets for the best record in the Western Conference. Coming into tonight, both teams had won on the other’s homecourt, though the Nuggets win at L.A. came without LeBron James.

2020 NFL Combine: Quarterback Prospects, Invites, What To Watch For

Rankings and what to watch for out of all the quarterback prospects invited to the 2020 NFL Combine.

Rankings and what to watch for out of all the quarterback prospects invited to the 2020 NFL Combine.

2020 NFL Combine: Quarterback

Date: Thursday, February 27: QB
Live Stream: fuboTV (click to watch for free)
Venue: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN
Network: NFL Network

From the college perspective. here are rankings and quick looks at all of the quarterbacks invited to the 2020 NFL Combine – and one who isn’t.

Before getting into the top five breakdown, here’s a ranking of the best of the rest and what to look for.

2020 Pre-NFL Combine Quarterback Best of the Rest Rankings

Number in parentheses is the projected round drafted before the NFL Combine.

18. James Morgan, FIU 6-4, 213 (Free Agent)
NFL Combine What Matters: There are a whole lot of NFL skills to like, and it starts with a special arm. He has the smarts and the skills to grow into a good backup, but is there enough in the overall package to be draftable?

17. Shea Patterson, Michigan 6-1, 202 (6)
NFL Combine What Matters: There’s a shot he goes from being a nice college quarterback to a solid NFL baller. Can he show enough arm strength to be more than a plucky backup who bounces around the league?

16. Brian Lewerke, Michigan State 6-3, 216 (Free Agent)
NFL Combine What Matters: Was it the team or the player? Great as a sophomore, miserable as a junior, and okay as a senior, does he have the raw skills worth developing as a key backup? He needs a workout to make him a late round flier.

[lawrence-related id=507689]

15. Cole McDonald, Hawaii 6-4, 220 (Free Agent)
NFL Combine What Matters: A pure short-range passer who’ll be worth a late flier, he needs to show off a decent deep arm. More than that, is there anything fixable about his throwing motion? He can throw, but does he have any NFL tools?

14. Kevin Davidson, Princeton 6-4, 225 (5)
NFL Combine What Matters: Everything is there but the at-bats. He has the right size, the right arm, and the right accuracy, but he’s going to need a whole lot of work with an NFL quarterback coach along with a whole lot of time.

13. Jake Luton, Oregon State 6-7, 229 (6)
NFL Combine What Matters: He’ll show of the arm, size, and NFL passing potential to be draftable, but he suffered a frightening back injury two years ago. Everything turned out to be fine, and he was able to play, but the medical evaluation will be a key part of the puzzle.

12. Bryce Perkins, Virginia 6-3, 215 (5)
NFL Combine What Matters: NOT INVITED TO THE NFL COMBINE

It doesn’t make any sense. In a year when there aren’t any amazing quarterback prospects outside of the top six or so, how is a 6-3 ultra-mobile baller who hit 65% of his throws and all but carried his team to the Orange Bowl not at least given a look in Indy? Perkins will be drafted. Several quarterbacks at the combine won’t be.

11. Kelly Bryant, Missouri 6-3, 225 (5)
NFL Combine What Matters: In every workout it’ll be all about three things: accuracy, accuracy, accuracy. He has the size, mobility, and NFL arm and tools. More reps are a must, but there’s a world of upside with a little work.

[lawrence-related id=507624]

10. Anthony Gordon, Washington State 6-2, 199 (5)
NFL Combine What Matters: He might not have the size, but he’s able to make every throw in the book. Arm strength is going to matter. He’ll need some developing, and he’ll be a great backup for a few years before he’s ready to roll, but he has the upside to be a higher-end Gardner Minshew or Kyle Allen.

9. Steven Montez, Colorado 6-4, 240 (5)
NFL Combine What Matters: The interview process will be everything. What’s missing? Why didn’t this work? If you were to build an NFL quarterback with the right size, right arm, and right mobility, it’s all there. He was fine at Colorado, but he never grew into a superstar … again, what’s missing?

8. Nate Stanley, Iowa 6-4, 243 (5)
NFL Combine What Matters: Can he move at all? The arm, strength, and pro-style passing tools are there, but he has to show accuracy on the run and has to show off decent enough feet to learn how to buy himself more time.

7. Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma 6-1, 218 (3)
NFL Combine What Matters: Can he throw like a pro-style passer, and does that even matter? He doesn’t fit in any sort of box or a type – except for, possibly, Taysom Hill in a create-a-package way – but he’s a peerless leader that everyone will want, just because. Just draft him and figure it out.

6. Jordan Love, Utah State 6-4, 225 (Top 20 overall)
NFL Combine What Matters: GOOD LUCK, Indianapolis – and that goes for the combine and the Colts – trying to make a call. On tools and upside, you take him ten out of ten times over Jake Fromm and almost everyone else, but can he quicken his throwing motion?

Can he connect on the deep ball and not just be a mid-range passer. There’s a whole lot there, but he’s going to have to show enough to be worth a top 15 overall pick.

Dee Snider-endorsed petition for AC/DC to play Super Bowl halftime picks up steam

Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider has lent his name to a cause that wants AC/DC to play halftime of Super Bowl LV.

Dee Snider wants AC/DC to play halftime of Super Bowl LV. The lead singer of Twisted Sister has backed a petition to try and get the Australian rock band the gig for next year’s game, which is scheduled to be played Feb. 7 at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium.

Snider took to Instagram to deliver his message to Commissioner Roger Goodell after the petition appeared on Change.org this month.

“There are a lot of bands that are stadium-worthy and a lot of bands that have sold hundreds of millions of records,” Snider said. “But the one band that I think has such crossover appeal to so many people in all genres is AC/DC.”

The catalyst for the movement is Gina Dilecce.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had some real metal play the halftime show for the Super Bowl,” she wrote in the online plea’s description. “Don’t get me wrong, all music artists have done a great job and should play the show, but we all need a turn.”

The appeal continues, “It’s time for some rock and roll! And who better than AC/DC to play? They are coming back together, making a new album and possibly touring again. This would be perfect! Come together, metalheads, and get this going! Dee Snider of Twisted Sister is with us!”

Football is a game of heavy hits so AC/DC’s metal music would be in tune with the Super Bowl.

If you want to join the cause, you can sign the petition by clicking here. As of this writing, more than 8,600 people have signed with the goal being 10,000.

Here’s a taste of AC/DC with the band’s anthemic “Highway to Hell.”

Kira Lewis Jr. wins big, despite Alabama’s OT loss to Auburn

Although the Alabama Crimson Tide fell short to Auburn on the road in overtime on Wednesday Night, Kira Lewis Jr. was nothing but a winner.

Although the Alabama Crimson Tide fell short to Auburn on the road in overtime on Wednesday Night, Kira Lewis Jr. was nothing short of a winner.

Lewis finished the game with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists to become the second player in Alabama basketball history to have a triple-double, the first since  Roy Rogers in 1996.

And that’s not all. As a team, Alabama broke 2 SEC single game records as a team with 22 three pointers, as well as having 59- three points attempts.

Although Alabama came up short, it was an impressive game, considering it was against the No. 11 team in the country, on the road.

Alabama now sits at 13-11 (5-6 in the SEC) while Auburn moves on to 22-2 (9-2 in the SEC).

The Crimson Tide take on LSU in Tuscaloosa on Saturday at 3:00 PM CT on ESPN2.
