Oregon Ducks RB Jordan James officially declares for 2025 NFL Draft

Oregon Ducks running back Jordan James has officially announced that he will declare for the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Oregon Ducks are losing one of their best offensive players this offseason, with running back Jordan James officially announcing on Monday  morning that he would be declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft.

James, who spent three years at Oregon, had a choice to make this offseason with one year of eligibility remaining should he choose to use it. Instead, James will continue his career at the NFL level, where he is expected to be a mid-round pick in April.

As the RB1 in 2024, James had a career year, rushing for 1,267 yards and 15 touchdowns. In his career, James had 2,215 yards and 31 touchdowns for the Ducks, playing a major role in the offense from his very first year as the program.

In his last game with the team, James left the Rose Bowl against Ohio State in the second quarter with a head injury and would not return to the game.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see what the Ducks do at the RB position with James declaring for the draft. Oregon hosted Tulane Green Wave RB Makhi Hughes for a visit over the weekend, and they are currently projected to land the redshirt sophomore running back out of the transfer portal.

Antonio Pierce finally comments on his job status as Raiders head coach

For the first time in a while, Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce spoke on whether he thinks he keep his job.

Over the past week, Antonio Pierce has been asked several times about his job status and each time his response was “no comment.” This includes immediately following the season-ending loss to the Chargers on Sunday, when he said it twice.

Finishing 4-13 this season, including a ten-game losing streak, many think Pierce could be fired after his first season as the full time coach. But come Monday morning, Pierce was still in place as head coach. This time he actually answered questions posed to him about his job.

“I haven’t been told anything different,” Pierce said about keeping his job.

He added that the noise about his job was all “coming from the outside, not inside the building.”

Pierce went on to speak of the future of the Raiders in such a way that suggested he would continue to be head coach. Making plans for the team’s future and speaking of his and GM Tom Telesco’s decisions this offseason.

It’s no guarantee that he will remain head coach, but he sure sounds like he expects to keep his job.

Top-4 stays put in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Auburn basketball’s SEC-opening win over Missouri keeps them at No. 2 this week.

Auburn basketball begins SEC play at 1-0 after taking down Missouri last Saturday, 84-68. The bad news is that Tennessee also earned a key win in SEC play, thus creating no change in this week’s coaches poll.

Auburn remains at No. 2 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll for the sixth-straight week after earning wins over Monmouth and Missouri at Neville Arena. The Tennessee Volunteers remain No. 1, followed by Iowa State at No. 3 and Duke at No. 4. The only change within the top five this week is the addition of Alabama at No. 5, who replaced Florida following the Gators’ loss to Kentucky. Florida now resides at No. 8.

Nine SEC teams make up this week’s coaches poll. Outside of the representatives in the top five, Kentucky checks in at No. 7 this week, followed by Florida (No. 8), Texas A&M (No. 9), Mississippi State (No. 13), Oklahoma (No. 16), and Ole Miss (No. 22).

Bill Belichick reacts to Patriots firing Jerod Mayo after one season

Bill Belichick reacts to Jerod Mayo’s firing

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick was asked to weigh in on the New England Patriots firing his successor, Jerod Mayo, after only one season as head coach when appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday.

The news of Mayo’s firing came down immediately after the team’s 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills in the regular season finale on Sunday.

Belichick didn’t offer much in the way of commentary on the move.

“Robert Kraft, Jonathan Kraft, Robyn Glaser—they’re the decision-makers there, who exactly does what and so forth,” said Belichick. “Mayo was hand-picked by Robert, but in the end, the decision-making is something that they have to comment on and identify.

“They’re the ones that are really making the calls there. They’re the ones that should comment on that. I really don’t know from the outside looking in. They haven’t called me and asked, though.”

Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft are expected to lead the search for a new head coach in New England. Mike Vrabel is currently viewed as the leading candidate for the job, even though the team has yet to conduct a formal interview.

Regardless, it’s safe to say the succession plan after Belichick was a complete failure on a multitude of levels for the Patriots.

Lions postgame medical report after victory over Vikings and securing the No. 1 seed

Lions postgame medical report after victory over Vikings and securing the No. 1 seed

The Lions secured the #1 seed along with the valuable bye but it wasn’t without some injury concerns.

Potential losses for next game:

  • Terrion Arnold
  • Pat O’Connor
  • Kevin Zeitler

Potential additions for next game:

  • David Montgomery
  • Ennis Rakestraw (unlikely)

Here are the injuries I saw in the Vikings game on my initial watch along with suspected diagnoses:

Jahmyr Gibbs – wind, 2q 13:50

Gibbs took a hard shot to abdomen. After being hunched over for a few seconds, he popped up quickly. He left the game briefly but returned in the next drive. There is a good chance he just had the wind knocked out. No issues the rest of the game and no concerns going forward.

Brian Branch – hit to head, 2q 12:33

Branch took a jarring hit to his helmet which put him at risk for a concussion. He got up afterwards shaking his head which was concerning, but there were no other signs of concussion on video (loss of consciousness, ataxia, dazed). He finished the game without issue.

Delayed concussion symptoms are possible but unlikely, and he should be fine for next game. Even if he had a concussion, he’d likely be available in two weeks for the next game.

Pat O’Connor – calf strain, 3q 12:06

This injury may have occurred off-screen as nothing was obvious on video. Officially he is listed with a calf which likely means a calf strain. He did not return to the game. His return will depend on severity.

Terrion Arnold – right foot sprain, 3q 11:35

This injury was interesting because there were confusing signs at first. He initially reached for the left ankle area. Video did show a left ankle external rotation which could have caused a high ankle sprain. However, the official report was a foot. Here is the video focusing on the left ankle/foot.

Subsequently, there was was video of him carted off nursing his right foot as well as a sideline report by Melissa Stark that it was indeed a right sided injury.

A re-look at the video showed that the right foot landed hard, and then his teammate’s leg landed on the heel which crunched and twisted his foot.

A toe hyperextension (turf toe) is a possibility, but more likely, this is a foot sprain.

X-rays after the game were reported by Dan Campbell to be negative. This is reassuring but doesn’t rule out a subtle, occult fracture, so he’ll have further imaging today.

He was seen in a boot in the locker room which is used to avoid further aggravation and does not necessarily signify something serious.

In many locker room videos, Arnold was in great spirits which along with the negative X-ray are reassuring early signs. It’s possible he could be available next game.

Levi Onwuzurike – right ankle, 4q 11:50.

The injury may have occurred off-screen as the video didn’t show anything. He appeared to be reaching for his right ankle which was already heavily wrapped. I looked back and the ankle wrap was not present on the first drive of the game, but showed up on the second drive. I didn’t see any obvious ankle injury on video during that first drive.

He also was wearing a right knee brace all game but looking back over the season, this was present last game as well as in the first game of the season.

He finished the game so hopefully this means the injury is mild.

Kevin Zeitler – right hamstring strain, 4q 3:52

Zeitler pulled up reaching for his right hamstring. He had a heavy limp on the sideline and did not return to the game although there were only a few garbage time plays left. He’ll likely get an MRI and his return will depend on severity.

NOTABLES

Alex Anzalone played 98% of snaps and looked good. Lions typically don’t ease their players back and this was no exception.

Emmanuel Moseley on Saturday before the game was placed on the NFI (non-football injury) list. He had been out with an illness all week. This likely ends his season that was sabotaged by a pec rupture in training camp. He appeared in only 2 games.

Duke Blue Devils stay No. 4 in updated USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll

The Duke Blue Devils kept themselves within the top five of the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll after last week’s wins.

[autotag]Cooper Flagg[/autotag] and the Duke men’s basketball team extended their win streak to eight games on Saturday, handing a red-hot SMU squad a 27-point loss on its own court, and coaches around the country still see the Blue Devils as a top-four team.

Duke stayed put at No. 4 in the updated USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll on Monday, staying behind the Tennessee Volunteers, Auburn Tigers, and Iowa State Cyclones in order.

Flagg has scored at least 20 points in five of Duke’s last seven games, dropping 24 against both the Mustangs and Virginia Tech last week, and the Blue Devils put at least 80 points on the board in three straight games for the first time in 2024-25.

The defense continues to look like the nation’s best, holding the ACC-leading SMU offense to just 62 points. Only three of Duke’s first 14 opponents finished better than 40% from the floor.

After a relatively unimpressive start for the rest of the ACC, no other member of the conference broke into the top 25. The Pittsburgh Panthers, who come to Durham on Tuesday, finished third in the Receiving Votes category.

Saints have already re-signed their first pending free agent for 2025

The New Orleans Saints have already re-signed their first pending free agent for 2025. Irish kicker Charlie Smyth will return to compete with Blake Grupe this summer:

The New Orleans Saints have a long list of pressing matters on their offseason to-do list, so it may be a little surprising to learn their first order of business was re-signing the backup kicker. But NFL Ireland’s Michael McQuaid first reported that Charlie Smyth was the first of the team’s pending free agents to put pen to paper on a new deal. It’s a two-year contract.

As for the timing? Smyth spent his rookie year on the Saints practice squad, so his contract expired after their final regular season game. We’ll see a wave of reserve/future contracts signed by players who were on the practice squad over the next week or two as the Saints work to retain them. Remember, these are league-minimum deals that effectively promise nothing more than an extended tryout at training camp. It’s standard practice for every team.

Hopefully Smyth can beat those expectations. The young pro has a big leg and he’s been hard at work refining his craft. He held his own in the preseason last summer and is poised to push Blake Grupe again in 2025. Grupe improved his accuracy on field goals (going from 81.1%, which ranked 25th last year; to 87.1%, which ranks 13th this season) but whiffed on a pair of extra point tries while extending his career-long to 57 yards. Grupe has earned some more trust but he’s not yet known for having ice water in his veins. We can’t rule out a rally by Smyth later this year.

Seahawks fire former Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb

The Seattle Seahawks parted ways with Ryan Grubb after just one season.

On January 6, 2024, Ryan Grubb was preparing Michael Penix Jr., Rome Odunze, and the Washington Huskies for a battle with the Michigan Wolverines in the national championship. One year later, he’s searching for a new job after just 11 months as the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator.

On what is known as Black Monday around the NFL, Grubb was fired by head coach Mike Macdonald and general manager John Schneider after an up-and-down first year at the NFL level.

“It’s really as simple as I felt like the direction our offense was going was different than the vision that I had for our team and we felt like it was a necessary decision at this point,” Macdonald said in an interview on the Brock and Salk show.

He oversaw the breakout of 2023 first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who finished his second season with 100 catches for 1,130 yards and 6 touchdowns, but also saw plenty of struggles. The Seahawks offensive line was one of the league’s worst units and allowed 54 sacks, which tied for third-most in the league.

Even though quarterback Geno Smith threw for a career-high 4,320 yards, he also threw 15 interceptions, which tied for No.3 in the league. As questions about his play-calling arose, Seattle also struggled to run the ball, finishing No. 28 in the league in rushing yards with 1,627.

If Grubb doesn’t choose to stay in the NFL, he could return to the college level and reunite with coach Kalen DeBoer as the offensive coordinator of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
