With no game to play this past weekend and only one of the top four teams in action, Kirk Herbstreit left Ohio State as his fourth-best team in the land. Alabama was the only team to take the field in the week before conference championship games and handled its business impressively.
Despite some Ohio State fans being upset with Herbstreit’s personal rankings, Herbie has actually been spot on with where the committee has ranked teams. And to be honest, the Buckeyes are sitting pretty. All they need to do is take care of business and win convincingly as a 20-point favorite when they face Northwestern for the Big Ten crown.
Notre Dame and Clemson facing off in the ACC championship game will take care of themselves. Regardless of who wins, Ohio State will almost assuredly move up to at least the No. 3 spot since it is doubtful the committee would match Clemson and Notre Dame for a third time this season. Of course, if Clemson loses, it is out, despite lobbying by Clemson head coach Dabo Sweeney earlier this week.
If somehow Florida were to upset Alabama in the SEC championship game, then chaos will ensue. However, Florida’s unexpected loss to a subpar LSU squad might change that. Of course, Ohio State can use some help from the Crimson Tide as well as a handful of other teams.

The most interesting move on Herbstreit’s list was Iowa State moving up to his No. 6 in his rankings. Does Herbie believe the Cyclones have a path to the CFP if they were to beat Oklahoma for a second time this season? We’ll find out Tuesday when the official rankings are revealed as we head into championship week.
