As you would expect with such a monumental win in the Sugar Bowl over Clemson, the Ohio State football team had plenty of players grade out as Champions. In addition, and in true team fashion, multiple players were selected as Players of the Game.
We’ll first start with the defensive side of the ball. For such an effort and dominating performance against a Tigers team that has a dynamic offense, the starting four on the defensive line, DE Jonathon Cooper, DT Haskell Garrett, DT Tommy Togiai, and DE Tyreke Smith were named Defensive Players of the Game.
That foursome held Clemson to just 44 yards rushing and sacked quarterback Trevor Lawrence twice, and forced three fumbles, recovering one of them.
Offensively, quarterback Justin Fields and running back Trey Sermon were named the Co-Offensive Players of the Game. Fields set Ohio State bowl game records for passing yards (385) and passing touchdowns (six) while earning the game’s Offensive MVP honors. Sermon’s 193 yards on the ground gives in 524 in the past two games, the most by any running back in a two-game stretch in program history. Yes, you read that correctly.
Rounding out the Player of the Game honors, CB Marcus Williamson and WR Jameson Williams were named Special Teams Players of the Game.
