Year in and year out, Ohio State has some of the best college football players in the land. This year has proven to be no different as the 7-0 Buckeyes prepare to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide for the College Football Playoff national championship in just a few days.
As the bowl season has wrapped up and just the national title game left to play, the Associated Press has released is all-bowl team for 2020/2021. Leading the way was Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields and his backfield mate, Trey Sermon.
Fields of course fought through severe pain after a targeting call on James Skalski to the lower back. Despite the injury, Field lit up the Clemson defense to the tune of 385 yards and six touchdown passes, missing on only six of his pass attempts.
Sermon was named to the all-bowl team after continuing his resurgence in the ground game. With Master Teague unable to play due to concussion protocols, Sermon was the featured back and racked up 193 yards rushing with a touchdown and another 61 yards through the air.
There were some notable Buckeyes left off the AP’s list. One glaring omission was wide receiver Chris Olave who hauled in six receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Interestingly, there were also no offensive linemen on the all-bowl team from Ohio State. Considering that Justin Fields was only sacked twice and hurried once, it seems like someone on the O-line should have been recognized.
Alabama also had only two players named for the honor. Wide receiver and Heisman trophy winner DeVonta Smith caught seven passes for 130 yards and three scores in the Rose Bowl to earn a spot. And on the defensive side of the ball, defensive lineman Christian Barmore was selected after recording five tackles and a sack against Notre Dame.
