Notre Dame Football: National and Super Bowl Champs

As we sit just days away from the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers strapping up to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, we’ll be having some sporatic fun here at Fighting Irish Wire in terms of former Notre Dame players and coaches who have had an impact on “The Big Game”.

One of the great “what-ifs” in sports and NFL history is what would have happened had the entire league not passed on Joe Montana, allowing the San Francisco 49ers to draft him in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft?

Montana however paired up with Bill Walsh and what happened was that one of the games greatest dyansties by winning four Super Bowls from 1981 to 1989.

Although not regarded as the most-skilled quarterback of all-time, he’s on the short list of the best to ever do it in the NFL.
