Notre Dame Football: National and Super Bowl Champs

As we sit just days away from the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers strapping up to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, we’ll be having some sporatic fun here at Fighting Irish Wire in terms of former Notre Dame players and coaches who have had an impact on “The Big Game”.

Do you know the first former Notre Dame player to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl?

Hint:  He was a former offensive tackle for the Fighting Irish.

At least for a few years before transtitioning and turning into one of the best tight ends the game has ever seen.

SUPER BOWL XI

Dave Casper caught a one yard pass to score the first touchdown in Super Bowl XI, becoming the first former Fighting Irish player to do so in the big game.

Casper, who played on the 1973 championship squad for Notre Dame had a Hall of Fame career, scoring 52 total touchdowns and pulling in over 5200 career receiving yards.
