Notre Dame Football: National and Super Bowl Champs

As we sit just days away from the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers strapping up to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, we’ll be having some sporatic fun here at Fighting Irish Wire in terms of former Notre Dame players and coaches who have had an impact on “The Big Game”.

Former Notre Dame defensive back Todd Lyght helped guide the Fighting Irish to a national championship in 1988.

Lyght went on to be an early first round pick by the Los Angeles Rams before they moved to St. Louis.  In 1999, the Rams got a surprise great season from then no-name Kurt Warner and won Super Bowl XXXIV.

SUPER BOWL XXXIV

The game is most remembered for Mike Jones making a tackle of Kevin Dyson at the one yard line, preventing the Titans from forcing overtime.

Another key play in that game came early in the third quarter when Lyght dashed through the Titans line and blocked a 47 yard field goal attempt by Al Del Greco.
