NFL trade market could be a seller’s market this offseason

Matt Ryan. Saquon Barkley. Why are those the two big names, along with Carson Wentz, on the trade market after GMs talked? Could be a sign of a seller’s market and buyer beware:

The NFL combine is in full swing Wednesday with players joining the media availability and head coaches also on the docket to talk. While a majority of players will say the right things, as they have been training to do, it will be interesting what quotes of interest come out of those times in front of the media.

Yesterday, many of the top front-office decision-makers had their time in front of the cameras including Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry. Berry talked about a lot of things including OT Jack Conklin being at the facility in Berea “every day” rehabbing from the 2021 season-ending injury.

The other front-office executives that talked had a few interesting things to say but nothing earth-shattering, as expected.

The one piece of information that has seemed to be settling in is related to the trade market. It looks as if most, if not all, of the high-tier quarterbacks will be staying with their teams.

With that in mind, three bigger names seemed to be placed directly on the trading block during combine interviews.

The first, Carson Wentz, has been known to be available. His poor performance down the stretch has placed Indianapolis in a difficult position after trading significant resources for the quarterback just last year. The Colts are ready to win now but need a passer. They are “working through it.”

Second, Matt Ryan’s name now might be at the top of the QB trade list. With Jimmy Garoppolo having shoulder surgery, Ryan could be the best signal-caller available. He is available if “someone gives you an offer you can’t refuse.” Atlanta has salary cap issues are could be moving toward a youth movement soon. Dealing Ryan could accelerate the process while lowering their cap problems.

Finally, Saquon Barkley was placed squarely on the block as the New York Giants are “open for business” when it comes to their roster. Barkley’s availability is interesting given where he was selected, the value of his position and his injury history.

With none of the top quarterbacks likely available in trades and a seemingly weak draft class near the top, placing Ryan and Barkley, and even Wentz, on the market is a smart move. While Ryan’s contract and production may not “deserve” significant compensation, the lack of other options could get the Falcons the kind of offer that would force their hand. Even with all the mentioned limitations with Barkley, teams desperate for a final piece could give the Giants something worthwhile.

The Wentz situation will be an interesting one. Few believe that the current QB class has anyone ready to lead a playoff team right away and there are doubts any will become top-tier guys in the NFL. While Wentz has shown his warts, another team could believe he is their best option and that they can get the best out of him.

With a weaker than normal top end of the NFL draft, enough teams believing they are ready to compete in 2022 and enough teams looking to transition on from a select few veterans, the NFL trade market could be one that benefits the sellers not the buyers. With the Browns in the buyers’ segment of teams looking to compete in 2022, that could be bad news. Only time will tell.
