NFL news: Washington officially retires the ‘Redskins’

The Washington Redskins nickname is no more.

Through a press release on Monday, the Washington Redskins officially became the Washington football team.

It was previously announced that Washington and NFL were going to “look into” changing the team’s nickname. Many consider the move a long-overdue needed change due to the racially-charged name and its offense to Native Americans.

The debate of the nickname goes back decades and current team owner Dan Snyder has kept the name, but recent pressures have worked. Among those pressuring the Redskins were prominent sponsors of the team, such as Nike. The athletic company pulled all of their Washington attire from their online stores. And now here we are. The news on Monday said the nickname is no more.

The team has yet to replace the nickname yet, but that’s going to be the next time on the docket for the league.
