There’s a new leader in the clubhouse for the services of Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields — depending on who you believe. Prior to today, many thought the San Francisco 49ers could be the team looking at drafting Fields at No. 3, but according to a report by Ian Rapoport, they might be looking at either Mac Jones or Trey Lance.
If that’s true, you can bet you’ll see some NFL executives and coaches scurrying to the telephones to wheel and deal because someone is going to want to move up to take Fields if he does indeed fall that far.
And, according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissaro, that team could be the New England Patriots. After explaining that things heat up around pick No. 7 or 8, and what teams are kicking the tires, Pellissero then mentions a team that would create a lot of buzz if it were to attempt to snag Fields.
… “and this is an interesting one,” Pelissero said. “The Patriots have been calling around in the top ten. Teams that have gotten those calls believe that their target would be Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Now it would cost the Patriots a lot to move from fifteen up to seven or eight, something probably in the region of a second-round draft pick, but that is a small price to pay if New England sees an opportunity to land a potential franchise quarterback.”

Where Fields goes at this point is anyone’s guess, but we’ll have our final call just prior to the draft. It may involve throwing spaghetti against a coin flip stuck on a dartboard while playing rock, paper, scissors, but we’ll do it anyway.
