NASCAR unlikely to make charter system permanent in Cup Series

NASCAR is unlikely to make the charter system permanent in the Cup Series moving forward, according to The Athletic.

NASCAR and its Cup Series team owners have been working on a charter agreement as the current contract expires after the 2024 season. Time is ticking, and Cup Series team owners are rightfully pushing for the charter system to become permanent in the new agreement. However, NASCAR appears to be firm in its stance.

According to The Athletic’s Jordan Bianchi, NASCAR Chief Operating Officer Jim France has told multiple people that a permanent charter system is a “non-starter.” Also, some race teams have accepted that France won’t budge on his stance and have accepted its fate. Therefore, charters would essentially have expiration dates moving forward.

It’s puzzling because franchises in other American sports don’t have to fight through this process despite TV deals being made on a timeline similar to NASCAR. If the charter system became permanent, teams and sponsors could invest more in NASCAR. The Cup Series team owners will continue to fight, but NASCAR seems committed to this stance.
