Mountain West follows other leagues.

The Mountain West has decided its fate of fall sports and the league announced that competition will begin no sooner than Sept. 26. Every sport except for football will be conference-only games with the former allowing for up to two non-league games.

All fall competition in the sports of men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, softball and baseball have been canceled. There is no word yet on sports that play in the spring and what those schedules will look like as some of those sports go into 2021.

Back to football, the teams can play 10 games with two non-league games this has to do with Air Force wanting to keep Army and Navy on the schedule for the Commander-in-Chief trophy.

Also, games can not begin until Sept. 26 meaning there will be a lot of shuffling going on. We made a mock schedule earlier about what an eight-plus two model would look like and as for just on the opponent side there is the need to add two games and drop five overall. Of the five that need to be dropped all but one would be from the FCS ranks, so that makes things easy.

What get tricky now are the dates for when the games can be played and also it should be noted that the league says the two non-conference games are optional. We could see teams play an uneven amount of contests and new teams that pop up on the schedule if there are conflicts from current non-league games.

The football championship games has three dates prepared in December which are the fifth, 12th and 19th. This lines up with other Power 5 conferences that are allowing some time.

It is surprising that the Mountain West is not following the Big Ten to get some games in early and allow for more mid-season adjustments. This means that football will not be scheduled to be played for another seven weeks for the Mountain West.

The conference is currently working on a new schedule and will announce that at a future date.
