It had appeared that 1-seed Michigan basketball would be destined to face 2-seed Alabama in the Elite Eight if it handled its business.

But, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum.

11-seed UCLA — a team that had to come back against Michigan State in the First Four play-in game — managed not only to make it to the Sweet 16, but it survived and advanced to take down the Crimson Tide in overtime, winning 88-78 on Sunday night. It’s the second time a First Four team has advanced to the Elite Eight.

So, on Tuesday night, the Wolverines will take on the Bruins for the rights to go to the Final Four. UCLA is ranked No. 20 according to KenPom, with the nation’s 12th-ranked offense and 58th defense. Michigan just took down No. 14 Florida State on Sunday and has also beaten No. 7 Iowa, No. 11 Ohio State and No. 13 Wisconsin twice.

This space will be updated with the official game time when it is announced.
