Micah Shrewsberry more comfortable in Year 2 at Penn State

Micah Shrewsberry continues to learn and grow as he becomes more comfortable in Year 2 at Penn State

Penn State men’s basketball is about to enter Year 2 under head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag], and the head coach of the Nittany Lions is beginning to get into a bit of a comfort zone in the position. Shrewsberry was a first-year head coach last season, and he continues to learn on the job as any good coach will do. And coming into his second season on the job, Shrewsberry says he is feeling more comfortable in his own shoes while admitting he still has much to learn.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be a finished product,” Shrewsberry said at Big Ten basketball media day in Minneapolis this week. “Growing each and every day. I think decisions, delegating, whatever it may be, it’s still going to be a process for me that I’m still trying to learn, I’m still trying to grow.”

Penn State showed some improvement as the season progressed last season, Shrewsberry’s first season as a head coach. The Nittany Lions certainly showed plenty of room for improvement, which was to be expected for a program in need of a rebuild. But Shrewsberry says that is part of the process.

“I want to be better for our team every single day, right? We had six losses at six points or less last year. How do we flip those to wins this year,” Shrewsberry asked aloud. “How do I change practice to make us better in those late-game situations so we change those to wins? That’s always a process that I’m trying to learn.”

Penn State went 14-17 last season in its first year under Shrewsberry, but the Nittany Lions ended the season with a pair of wins in the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament against Minnesota and Ohio State before bowing out to Purdue, where Shrewsberry had previously been an assistant coach.

“Year one to year two I’m way more comfortable, I can tell you that,” Shrewsberry said. “I can say a drill and everybody kind of knows it, our staff knows it. We’re growing as a program. Take our team into Big Ten arenas, not the first time we’ve done it. That part of we’ll feel a little better about.”

“I still got a lot to learn.”
